Afghanistan massacre suspect named as Sgt Robert Bales
BBC ^ | 16MAR12 | N/A

Posted on 03/16/2012 3:53:49 PM PDT by Future Snake Eater

Senior US officials told the BBC the name of the suspect as he was heading back to the US to face charges. He is being flown to Fort Leavenworth, in Kansas, from Kuwait. His lawyer, John Henry Browne, said on Thursday that the suspect was a 38-year-old man who had been injured twice while serving in Iraq. He also said the accused had witnessed his friend's leg blown off the day before the killings. That incident has not been confirmed by the US Army. The Taliban called off peace talks in the wake of Sunday's deadly rampage - in which men, women and children were shot and killed at close range. The US has stressed it remained committed to Afghan reconciliation. Afghan President Hamid Karzai has also reacted angrily to the killings. He told the US it must pull back its troops from village areas and allow Afghan security forces to take the lead in an effort to reduce civilian deaths. On Friday he said the US was not fully co-operating with a probe into the killings.

Obama has a withdrawal date and we are training the Afghans to defend theirselves from the Chinese? this sounds like one hell of a mission.
The heroin goes where? laundered and drugs sold to? I am wondering more and more about this scenario...it sounds dirty.
Remember the blood for oil and the writings by Claudia Rossett? on how the UN was involved with taking money by the millions? Kofi Anan and his son? also, other nations and companies involved? some were our allies...became rich and looks like they got away with it. Anan should have gone to prison.

I will most certainly keep them in my prayers. When I heard the words” traumatic brain injury” I wondered how he could have been cleared for duty. This particular injury alters and ultimately changes everything..normal processing..personality etc. But with all of the deployments..it would seem that the powers that be are more concerned with “warm bodies” for deployment rather than the health of our service members.

Thanks for the ping, girlene. Normally you know me as the shy, quiet type...

Ya, I happened to read your posts on this issue AFTER I pinged you,bhfred.... lol, I guess you DO have an opinion.

It will be interesting to see how this story unfolds. One thing comes to mind, if SGT Bales "snapped", would it be typical to go back to base, confess, then ask for a specific lawyer?

I contend there is plenty we still do not know.

Thanks for the ping Girlene.

The news reports have been all over the place on this story.

It’s one soldier, it’s several soldiers, a helicopter was involved, shooting victims were burned after they were shot, it was drunk soldiers laughing as they were shooting. None of it makes any sense. Something stinks about this.

I’m reserving judgement just like we should with all such incidents until more factual information and hard evidence is known.

If it can be proven that the shooter acted alone without orders and not in selfdefense, then all bets are off. In the meantime, I’ll pray for the Sgt. and his family.

Rich unnamed Asian supposedly helped fund the 9/11 terrorists too, but I read it here at FR. Since 0bomber is a Chinese agent, (remember the deep kiss with an unknown Asian women at the closed Disney World), clearing the playing field MO, Afghanistan is payoff to the Chinese. Heroin is for the zombie Jihadis and crazy world leaders sons to get crazy on. Saddam’s sons remember.

You can learn a lot at FR as long as you are aware of the planted stories and posts.

Do you think that the U.S. should get out of Afghanistan at this point, that all the main objectives have been reached; and now that Karzai and others are making noises to have Americans out of their country, should we leave?

It isn’t fair to tie the hands of the soldiers in so many ways, and have the Commander in Chief and his regime keep on demoralizing our soldiers. It puts them more in harm’s way than normal.

I tell you, when the Clintons were “ruling”, Hillary’s hatred of the military and Clinton’s cavalier use of the military took the cake. The cynical Obama puts the Clintons in the shade.

The Army dropped the ball.

I understand what you're trying to say, but I think the Army is playing with the hand it was dealt by our government.

We've been told for nearly a generation that we need an army big enough to fight 2 wars, so what did it mean when they cut it from 18 divisions down to 10 and then decided to get into action in the bosnia, and then kosovo, and then Iraq and Afghanistan?

It meant the GOVERNMENT was insisting that the Army deploy and re-deploy the same troops OVER AND OVER AGAIN in the government's game of "how long can we drag out this war."

This is different than in WWII where the troops were activated for longer but weren't brought into and out of danger on one year rotations. They were in it to win it and when it was over it was over and they were home to stay home.

This is different than Vietnam in which troops were on a one year rotation, but many were draftees whose personal hell ended when they got home and got out.

This is our first "long-term rotation war." I can see that the mental toll on our troops is devastating.

At the same time, I'm waiting for more info on Sgt Bales' actions to come out as to what military reasons he might have thought he had for attacking that location at that time. Perhaps there are none, and perhaps he did have a melt-down, but I'm still waiting on judgement until I hear more from his defense team.

Yes, there are a lot of inconsistencies in the reports.

Irenic's post highlights some thoughts in this FR thread, post 46

Now maybe some of these inconsistencies are due to Afghani statements which are not always trustworthy (the cousins at the second house saw two soldiers enter the house next door at 3 am, then they ran away????? What were they doing up at 3 am to look who was going in or out of their cousin's house?)

Vel, the info so far sounds somewhat like McJerk wrote 6 years ago but I'm pretty sure he's not involved and I doubt the little weasel has it in him to go to Afghanistan.

Know that you, your family and SSGT Bales and family are in our prayers. I am so grateful for the sacrifices that our military members and their families have made. I'm proud of the military for getting him out of the country and know that some careers may have been sacrificed for that effort.

This is a courageous act. I salute you for it.

The administration has labeled the Ft. Hood terrorist a case of “workplace related violence” whereas they are branding this a warcrime.

The murder of a POW named Gaddafi was ALSO a warcrime yet Sec. of State Hillary Clinton laughed and said “we got him!”.

The administration encourages terrorist attacks to “avenge” this brutal attack. Their moral “outrage” is inconsistent and not based in morals.

OUCH!

It was clear that you had inside information from some prior posts, but I never dreamed the relationship was so close.

I've had some long discussions with my niece about not wanting to see her on FOX News someday as the “poster girl” for soldiers torturing people or shooting civilians. Let's just say the South Korean rules under which her father and grandfather served in the ROK Army allow far more leeway than the United States — “kimchi temper” is not a joke for Korean soldiers.

However, that's hypothetical. What you're dealing with is blunt force reality and I feel horrible for you.

That’s the thing that is the goofiest. If he “snapped” he sure knew when and how to snap back into normal mode as if nothing had happened.

Know what it reminds me of? It reminds me of the drone that flew into Iran and landed itself totally intact. I hadn’t followed all the explanations for that but at one point I know it was believed that the Iranians had figured out how to trick the GPS on the drone so that it THOUGHT it was landing in Afghanistan. That’s how they got it to come to them totally intact.

Seems like this guy went on a mission that miraculously landed him right back there on base, intact, turning himself in, asking for a lawyer, and expecting everything to be OK.

Bizarre. Like he was programmed just like that drone. (And we’ve had quite a few drones with “issues” lately...)

Of course, we have no clue what really happened, or even if one-tenth of what’s been put out is accurate. Anything could be true. But what’s been put out so far is just plain bizarre and raises LOTS of questions in my mind.

Congress needs to be taken too the woodshed and spanked till it regains it's senses. Until sanity is restored as too the allowed End Troop Strengths, lengths and frequency of combat deployment, and even the actual enlistment obligation itself being restored back too the 4/2 ratio our troops will suffer the ill effects of it.

Our nations troops have literally been deployed into combat since Desert Storm almost non stop. During this time both congress and sitting presidents gutted the military. These guys are seeing far more repeated carnage over a longer period of time than any other time frame in our history.

The human mind is capable of only so much carnage before undesirable results surface. One of the first is PTSD. You can not get over PTSD in weeks, months, or in some cases a few years. No pill can really stop it as it is a decompressing of sorts of looking at events and putting them where they belong. Re-injury during this process compounds it. That is true no matter what circumstances lead up too PTSD.

If the reports of his injury are accurate the foot injury should have and in previous times in fact would have ended his career. Those safeguards were there for reasons more than besides how far a man could march.

If he snapped I can understand it. He should not have been pushed too that point. I have also been hearing for years that some in combat have been given antidepressants too deal with the stresses. IF that is policy it needs to end now as it can get people killed. The last thing needed on the battlefield is someone tripping. By tripping I mean hallucinating and such medications can induce this in some persons.

I'll give him a huge benefit of the doubt as too what happened and be thankful it wasn't me or my own facing what that man has. Your knowledge of his as well of what we have been told of his record says he is a fine soldier. We may never know what really happened and he may never even know why it happened. And it could have been a case of he knew or highly suspected a target was living there. The cowards just don't come out and fight a battle. Homes are their nest and civilians won't give the thugs up. How many times does a reasonable man let them attack their units and retreat? Once would be my answer. Prayers for him and his family.
