Poll: Romney Has Work To Do Ahead of Illinois GOP Primary

By Rick Pearson

March 11, 2012 Republican presidential front-runner Mitt Romney's campaign has long considered Illinois to be in its win column, but a new Chicago Tribune/WGN-TV poll shows the candidate has some work to do to make that a reality.

The survey found Romney slightly ahead of Rick Santorum, 35% to 31% — within the poll's 4-percentage-point margin of error. Trailing far behind were Newt Gingrich with 12% and Texas Rep. Ron Paul with 7%. Another 16% were undecided.

There's room for movement ahead of Illinois' March 20 primary, however. Fully 46% of voters said they could still change their minds before the election.

The survey of 600 confirmed registered voters likely to vote in the Illinois Republican primary was conducted Wednesday through Friday, prior to Santorum winning Kansas' GOP caucuses.

Illinois was expected to be a firewall for Romney after Tuesday primaries in Alabama and Mississippi, a pair of southern states where he has lowered expectations. There are typically more moderate GOP voters in Chicago's suburbs, and Romney's campaign has some operational depth in the area.

And the poll showed Romney is doing well in the suburbs. In Cook County, he leads Santorum 39% to 30%. In the more heavily Republican collar counties, Romney held a 39% to 27% edge.

Once again Romney is winning all the areas Obama will win in the fall. And losing the rest. Obviously time for the rest to rally behind those 7% and 12% candidates to keep the Chicago candidate in the race.

Paul needs to get out. After more than 20 primaries thus far, he hasn’t demonstrated that he can win one single primary, let alone the nomination. He’s only taking votes away from the STOP ROMNEY side. If he continues to stay in, he just proves that it’s about HIM and nothing else.

Our best bet to beat Mitt is for Rick to cut a deal with Newt to let Newt be at the top of the ticket. This is the best chance Rick has to eventually become pres. They could campaign together as a team—an unheard of strategy that would capture press attention.

Paul would be the last one to leave. Heck I see Rick, Newt AND Romney dropping before Paul. lol. He is just in this for entertainment anyway. I think that if you decide to run for office, you should have to resign from your current job. I never thought it was right for a candidate representing a certain area or state should be able to travel around the country and still get a paycheck. The only one out of the four who is still getting their paycheck is Paul. This is not right.

Illinois is open primary and the rats will vote in the republican primary in droves, who they will vote for is anybody's guess.

What kind of stupid party allows an open primary... let the opposition help pick your candidate is about as smart as letting your ex-wife pick your new one !!

I realize the battle for being the stupidest state GOP party is very competitive. But it's hard to see how anyone can beat my eastern neighbors. March 20th is when Obama votes in the GOP primary for whomever he wants to oppose in the fall. I presume Rahm already has his marching orders and expect the cemeteries to be very lively.

Here comes Newt to the Land of Lincoln as soon as he win Alabama and Missisppi Heehee.

If Romney is to be beaten, these sort of fantasies need to end. The best chance to defeat Romney is for NEWT to cut a deal with RICK. Rick is ahead in delegates. There is NO chance of any one but Rick beating Romney in Illinois.

It's registered voters, not likely voters, so this may benefit Romney more than reality.

Is it possible Santorum might actually win one of these Big Labor states that have favored Romney?

“There is NO chance of any one but Rick beating Romney in Illinois.”

Absolutely, Kazan.

Criticism of Newt has been minimal on this site..while the Santorum haters spew their vile comments every day..

It’s time to get real. If we want to fight Romney, Newt needs to decide whether he wants to be a kingmaker or a spoiler by staying in the race..So far, there is no evidence that he intends to be the former and a champion for Conservatives.

He and Callista dancing into the wee hours in a hotel bar two nights ago. Come on. This man is not a serious candidate...but it’s his bigger than the state of Texas ego that stands in the way of progress.
