Gingrich inspires excitement in fanbase at Dothan rally
Dothan Eagle ^ | March 10, 2012 | Greg Phillips

A two-and-a-half-hour drive couldn’t separate Patricia Tayman from Newt Gingrich’s rally in Dothan.

The Pensacola, Fla., resident left Sunday’s event with a smile on her face, confident Gingrich is the right man to lead the country in the years to come.

“I’m psyched, and I’m just praying he can pull it off in Mississippi and Alabama and get back ahead of things,” she said. “I’ve watched the different debates, and after seeing him in person, I’m behind him 100 percent now.”

Enterprise resident Tracy Bullinger said her trip to the Circle City was worth it as well.

“I did not know much (about Gingrich) before the speech,” she said after the event. “I’m very excited about his platform, very excited about his plan for harvesting our resources here in the states and getting us some independence from overseas. He will have my vote Tuesday.”

For some, like Bullinger, the decision in Tuesday’s primary election is already made.

“He was a very effective speaker of the House, and he deserves our attention,” said Jack Mizell of Ozark. “We had to have a revolutionary war to get rid of King George III because he was a tyrant. It looks like Newt Gingrich can get rid of the tyrant we have now without a revolution. He was most effective (at the rally).”

Several people expressed support for Gingrich’s plan to drive gasoline prices down to $2.50 per gallon.

“He’s the only one that’s got a plan,” said T.A. Miller. “His idea of $2.50-a-gallon gas may be unrealistic, but it’s at least a start. Nobody’s got a plan like his. He probably will (have my vote).”

Gingrich talked about the importance of drilling for oil inside the U.S., a topic that drew applause from the audience.

“Energy is the issue,” Mizell said. “We have a president who doesn’t understand anything about energy. We have to have somebody with some leadership.”

Not everyone was willing to commit their votes after the event, though.

“That’s still up in the air, but it’s more likely (for Gingrich) than it was before today,” said Darlene Hicks, a Headland resident who praised Gingrich’s speech. “It was different from what I expected, but I was encouraged by what he said. I thought it would be more negative, but I thought it was positive what he was saying. Drilling was one thing he mentioned, something we need to do to be independent instead of dependent on other countries. Getting back to the constitution was another thing he mentioned that was very important to me.”

One thing those questioned after the event agreed on, however, was the importance of the upcoming election.

“I’ll never see one as important in my lifetime as this one,” Miller said. “You can’t live long enough to see one as important.”

Bullinger said she’s supporting Gingrich because of her concern for the future of the country.

“I think this election is very important because we need a big change in our country right now,” she said. “If we don’t make a big change, there’s not going to be anything left for our younger generations."

I live in Dothan and had no clue Gingrich was even coming here to speak. I have had four robo-phone calls today from Romney folks, including one from Ann Romney, but none from any other (R) candidate. Haven’t heard a soul mention Newt was coming to town.

I can’t imagine why any conservatives would pass up an opportunity to support a man like Newt in favor of a lightweight putz like Wittle Wicky Santorum.

Comparing Newt to Wittle Wicky is like comparing Churchill to Pee Wee Herman.

Great story, thanks for sharing. Been away today/first story I’ve read. The more people learn of Newt; unfiltered from the media, more people will come to see that he is our only hope. Obama’s administration is nothing short of a war against American values and traditions. I just don’t see Romney leading with an inspirational march for reforms. We cannot allow Romney to represent the republican party since HE is the very person who has taken away our freedoms with socialized medicine. Insane, politically correctness continues to destroy our freedoms. Newt has to stay in; that Ricky character has really begun to get under my skin. The only reason he is doing well is thanks to the media, the holier than thou gone overboard and the dems voting for him. He will never beat the Obama regime. He is no Washington nor Henry. (I will never vote for him) May God help Newt and for the sleeping giant (of those who love liberty) to awaken.
