Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell signs Virginia ultrasound bill

Amid continued protests from Democrats, Republican Governor Bob McDonnell on Wednesday signed into law a controversial bill requiring Virginia women to undergo an ultrasound procedure prior to having an abortion. The bill sparked national debate this month over a provision that would have required many women to undergo transvaginal ultrasounds, which opponents decried as medically unnecessary and physically invasive. McDonnell, a conservative who opposes abortion rights, ultimately requested that mandate be stripped. The Virginia House of Delegates passed a revised version last week that allows women to "reject" a transvaginal ultrasound and instead opt for an abdominal ultrasound, which generally yields less information in the early stages of a pregnancy.

In a statement Wednesday, McDonnell reiterated his support for the bill, which he argues will provide additional information that "can help the mother make a fully informed decision" about having an abortion.

"This bill does not legally alter a woman's ability to make a choice regarding her pregnancy," the statement said. "It does, however, put Virginia in line with 23 other states that have some type of requirement that a woman be offered a view of an ultrasound before an abortion can be performed."

The bill is slated to go into effect on July 1.

According to a study by the Guttmacher institute, Virginia will become the eighth state to require medical providers to administer ultrasounds on women before performing abortions. In Texas, the provider must also display and describe the image of the ultrasound.

Virginia Democrats on Wednesday blasted McDonnell for signing the bill, urging opponents of the legislation to contribute to the Democratic party as a means of fighting back.

Does Governor McDonnell oppose “abortion rights” or “abortion”?

Note the wording

OMG.. informed decisionmaking... no wonder the dems are so up in arms over this. Their hope was a taxpayer-funded, no-questions-asked, abortion mill operation.

Just a ‘blob of fetal tissue’. Ultrasound Imaging should only confirm that for the baby killing leftists so nothing to fear?
Also wouldn’t the ‘pro-choicers’ be thrilled that a young woman be provided with informative scientific criteria as is their right? Or is medical ultrasound only for the non-progressive, neanderthals of backwards mentality?

OK. So this time government requiring medically unnecessary medical procedures is applauded. I get it.

Is no one the slightest bit uneasy about the precedent being set?

Since the state government is requiring it, do the taxpayers of Virginia pay for it?

Nothing is required. You don’t have to get an abortion. The states can regulate abortion under the 10th amendment. Anything that rolls back the falsely declared constitutional right to abortion is a good thing.

Good point. If someone opposes murder, do we say they oppose murder rights?

Now, I suppose somone could argue (and they have) they are personally “against abortion” (as in they don’t like it an wouldn’t do it), but “pro-abortion rights”, (as in they think others should be able to kill their unborn babies). But there is no such thing as being “against abortion rights”.

ultrasound procedure prior to having an abortion.

People who need operations or some procedures are required to have post-op, blood tests, X-rays, even in some out-patient procedures. Why should this 'conveyor belt' procedure any different?

Democrats no longer want abortion to be safe, legal & RARE.

Perhaps they never did.

Well, it's never been "safe" in any case.

I am very uneasy over it. I for one do not want ONE DIME of my tax dollars going to ANY services for any woman considering abortion. She wants one, she can pay for the whole thing from beginning to end, as well as fund all the psychological help she’s going to need in the future. This is STILL government financial involvement in the issue.

This will not deter the average abortion-minded female. It will only make her more vehemently against Republicans. These immoral selfish women are going to kill their kids no matter what anyone tells them. They will just deny personhood like they always do.

They are also out there indignantly calling it rape and violence against women. It just gives them more ammo. Not even worth it.

If we made it optional, it might be ok.

Send the Governor a “Thank You” letter to let him know his efforts, his principles, and his sense of justice are appreciated.

He may have saved some lives here. We owe him a “Thank You” at the very least.

Some kids may escape the butcher’s block because of his political courage.

Thanks for posting his address. I just sent him a thank you.

We found out that Planned Parenthood doesn’t “do” mammograms.

Now they will have to spend some more of our tax $$$ to buy ultrasound machines and ultra sound techs pay and not on their infamous marketing strategies.

Have you ever heard of a business that prides itself on killing off its future customers???
