Wanted: Deus Ex Machina [There are none so blind...]

Rich [Lowry], you have nailed it re the necessity of defeating Barack Obama this fall. But how to do it? Despite Romney’s wins yesterday, there’s still a so-what air about his candidacy; he’s like one of those seat-warmers at the Oscars who slips into the vacancies so as to give the continuing illusion of a packed house. He’s a passionless candidate with a passionless following at a time that positively demands passion in order to counter the great Axelrod Media Machine, the wholly owned subsidiary of the Democratic party and its functioning propaganda arm.

Take the latest Romney “tax” plan. It’s absurd. The zeitgeist is screaming out for a top-to-bottom rethink of the tax system......

[snip]

Instead, Romney gives us tax-bracket tweaking and — this is rich, coming from a guy who hardly pays income taxes, since his wealth derives largely from capital gains — “limits placed on deductions, exemptions, and credits that are currently available” on “higher-income Americans.” Explain to me again how Romney is a conservative?

Further, Mitt’s running on a “jobs” platform, which for lots of reasons I find unconvincing. To sunnily present yourself as the man who will put America back to work is to pretend that there’s nothing fundamentally wrong with the country, when in fact the nation is in mortal peril, both externally and internally. What’s Mitt going to do? Sell off the best bits of America Inc., fire the remaining workers, and proclaim victory? Yeah, that’ll work . . .

What’s needed is someone who a) understands the problem, b) can articulate it, and c) is completely unafraid of the Punahou Kid. Who can knowledgeably argue his positions with unthreatening intensity. And who frankly doesn’t give a damn what the petticoats in the media think..........

If that is what they want, they have it in Newt Gingrich. So either they're blind, lying or think we're stupid.

If those who have been pushing Mitt on us took 10% of that effort to back Newt Gingrich, he'd do the remaining 90%.

There is no need to believe that "a seemingly unsolvable problem is suddenly and abruptly solved with the contrived and unexpected intervention of some new event, character, ability, or object [deus ex machina]."

The candidate he dreams of is already in the primary, Newt Gingrich.

On a positive note, today I got a honk and a thumbs up from a driver behind me when he saw the Newt sticker on my back window, and I'm in California.

I'll take any encouragement I can get. It's better than having my Car Keyed by a compassionate Liberal who would be eating Asphalt if I caught him in the act.

Instead, the author is pushing Paul Ryan, who doesn’t even want the job, lol! Talk about clueless!

No kidding. The GOP-e cleared the path for Mitt so this talk is a distraction to dismiss Romney's opposition. It's pointless but it seems to amuse them.

What was most amazing to me this week was Romney’s complete exoneration of Obama from having responsibility for the skyrocketing price of gas.

And what we’re seeing now is Romney’s ‘red meat’, primary stage fight, version of himself. This is a ‘Republican’ who primarily appointed Democrat governors during his one previous term in public office.

And yet we’re supposed to back him because, despite his incredibly out of touch, foot-in-mouth personality for a politician at any level and his always having to pay record amounts per vote earned, he’s supposed to be ‘electable’.

Romney is exhibit 1A of why I'm NOT a Republican.

The handlers of the GOP are every bit as elitest and conniving as the worst of the dims.

This is how the peoples' voice is silenced; this is how the passion of the Tea Party (a direct threat to both dim & GOP power) is disarmed.

I shudder to think of what price we're going to pay to clean this putrid porridge out of our house.

....well put, and the GOP-e would rather have Zero for 4 more and the money and graft than allow a Conservative to break up their game. It became apparent to me years ago when the conservatives got Simon in for the Gov slot and the Rinos disappeared until the Dems were safely back in chanrge in Sacto.

ymmv

Even though this appeared on the Corner, I don’t think Walsh is on the Romney team, and I also think he’s right that Paul Ryan would have a better chance than any of the candidates we have. He would certainly bring the discussion back on topic.

There are videos of Mitt comforting voters, assuring them that he is a progressive, not wanting to usher back Reagan. He's got a trail of flip-flops that would gag a maggot on a meat wagon.
