GRAND RAPIDS (WZZM) -- Michigan State Police say a man who walked into a Grand Rapids school with a gun was protected by state law.
Around noon Tuesday, the man walked into the polling place at Aberdeen Elementary School with a gun clearly visible in his holster. The man told administrators he had a concealed carry permit, and was trying to stand up for his legal right to carry a gun on election day.

School leaders expect the man to face a misdemeanor charge, but that may never happen.
Sgt. Aimee Maikee with the Michigan State Police says someone with a valid concealed weapons license can carry a visible, holstered gun into schools, daycare centers, banks, churches, bars and sports arenas.
Sgt. Maikee says no one is allowed to carry weapons into the sterile part of a commercial airport, into a courthouse, or onto private property without the owner's approval.
"There are some people that think that individual should never -- even if it's not illegal under michigan law -- that people shouldn't carry a firearm into a school," says Sgt. Maikee. "There are other people that believe just as strongly the other way, that it's their right to carry gun and they do it for safety reasons."
You never can tell any more whether or not you may face quasi-uniformed militants with clubs outside a polling place. now that Obama and Holder have made that legal by not charging those who have dont it.
I don’t blame him for carrying a weapon. It’s self-defense.
I printed the article, and will be showing this to all the school workers I see on a weekly basis. This will open their eyes....... I have my CCW in Michigan here and go to a bunch of schools to do business. I won’t ever open carry, unless it’s on my own property.
Kinda funny if you think about it. Its illegal to smoke a cigarette on school grounds but you can carry a gun. LOL
Carrying a gun is much more healthy than smoking a cigarette.

Still fighting that damn thang in congress I believe. As in Texas I can carry around a school, but not inside the school due the states definition of premises. One can walk their kids up to the door , open it and let em inside but when or if I cross the threshold I violate state law for here in Texas.
But the damn Federal GFSZ Act of 95 trumps even that local rule . Should a alphabet agency FLEA want to push the issue..... I get slammed for the 1000ft rule.
Has Michigan in some form found a way around that Federale Cow Crap ??

I think I found such here..... a good example of the exemption. (albeit a VA permit question, a good explanation of the rule by ATF.

Key to the exemption seems to be if the permit issued requires a “background check” before issued. for those states that do not do a background check before issue or open carry seems that the GFSZA still may be a “gotcha” in the gazillion BS laws on the books......

If the towns, cities, counties or states could collect the fines there would be road blocks the day before the opening of deer season.

Ho boy; I don’t see that one living very long in courts. “Right to Travel” and “Right to Keep and Bear Arms” all in one.
The key word here is " IF "
Does this apply to daycare too?
My read is that it would not apply to private daycare. If the daycare were in a school, then it would apply.
