Muslims are like Mormons...totally non-historical, until their “prophet” comes along.
I’ve always considered Islam to be a re-interpreted, knock-off copy of Judaism and Christianity.
For anyone creating a new religion, they will always be starting from the existing cultural milieu around them. We see the same thing from cultists and new religious branches in our own society.
For someone in the Arabian Peninsula in the 7th century having “visions” - what dominant, “successful” religions would he see around him? What would be an acceptable starting point? It would be Judaism and Christianity. Like most cultists - Mohammed just takes what society already has, complete with the monotheism, prophets and even the angels of Judaism and Christianity, and adds his own completing and final “revelations.” His “visions” also wedded Christianity and Judaism to the existing Arab, nomad, tribal culture.
He doesn’t talk about it much, but good old Jihad is generally thought to be a Christian Arab.
Have you ever heard of a self-detonating Mormon?
