Rick Santorum has emerged as a much more popular figure with the partys conservative base in Wisconsin than his GOP rivals, according to a new statewide poll.
But all four Republican presidential candidates trail President Obama by double-digits in a Marquette Law School survey of 716 registered voters taken Sunday through Thursday.
Obama, who last week made his first 2012 trip to Wisconsin, leads Santorum here 51% to 40% in a general election matchup. He leads Mitt Romney 53% to 38%. He leads Ron Paul 52% to 36%. And he leads Newt Gingrich 56% to 33%.
Those numbers coincide with a slight uptick in Obamas popularity since last month and an erosion of support for Romney and Gingrich, two big-name Republicans whove taken on baggage in their partys bruising, topsy-turvy nominating fight.
Both Romney and Gingrich have seen their numbers worsen among Republicans since Marquettes previous poll in January. And both trail Santorum, the former Pennsylvania senator, by double-digits among likely GOP primary voters in Wisconsin.
Among registered voters who say they plan to vote in the states open presidential primary April 3, Santorum leads with 34%, followed by Romney with 18%, Paul with 17% and Gingrich with 12%.
That mirrors Santorums rise to the top of the national polls in a GOP race that has defied a tidy resolution, creating at least the chance that the Wisconsin Primary six weeks from now could play a role in the nominating fight.
If that contest were held today, Santorum would find himself in better shape than his three competitors, who have much higher negatives among the GOP base.
The chart below shows how Republican voters in Wisconsin viewed their partys presidential candidates in the February survey:

FReep Mail me if you want on, or off, this Wisconsin interest ping list.
Stop the world, I want off.
Let be the one to ask, where was that poll taken? In the shadows of Milwaukee’s liberal center. I would NEVER even consider walking around that area after dark (or in the day time for that matter). Then we have Madistan, the home of the central American Communism’s center. Both of the two areas I speak of are where two Universities are located. Need I say more?
If we Wisconsites could only put a fence around those two places, Wisconsin would be a really great place to live.
Look at the internals and the polling percentage by political party before doing something rash. Its more cooked than usual and most of the respondents came from the most liberal areas of WI.
We’re doing ok here.
Meanwhile Rasmussen reports Obama up 6-8 in Virginia.
Obama is incredibly lucky that we have such a weak field of candidates.
It was a marquette poll, according to the article. And it was probably conducted by phone.
The great thing about WI is that most people don’t ever have to go to either Milwaukee, or Madtown. I haven’t for years.
Adjusting my tin foil hat as I'm thinking this slate of so very weak candidates wasn't just happenstance...
While I question the polls accuarcy
Part of that is the result is Wisconsin Governor Walker’s reluctance to connect the dots, attributing Obama’s administration orchestrating and suppogting his recall including the damaging of state property, disrupting the legislative process, and the fascist method of intimidation Walker supporters committed by members of the DCP (Demo-Com Party) and out of state members of the SEIU, NEA, and AFSME during their Walker recall campaign t.,
We methodically destroyed each of our candidates, and now the worst President in the history of our country, is highly likely to be re-elected — perhaps by a very comfortable margin.
The GOP has served itself up to the media like raw steak to a lion during this primary process... Obama was so done and now he has the perception that he has a fighting chance..... look at ourselves as responsible and not being united.
Right - I’m not sure about the others, but Madison has long been regarded one of the most liberal cities in America.
A poll of registered voters and not likely voters is absolutely worthless.
