Poll: Christie is top choice at 'brokered' convention

New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie is the top choice of Republicans if the party nominates its presidential candidate at a "brokered" convention this summer, according to a Quinnipiac University national poll released Wednesday.

Mr. Christie is favored by 32 percent of Republicans, followed by former Govs. Sarah Palin of Alaska and Jeb Bush of Florida with 20 percent each, the poll found. Indiana Gov. Mitch Daniels is fourth at 15 percent.

Some conservatives are contemplating a so-called brokered Republican National Convention in Tampa, Fla., in August, in which none of the current candidates would have gained enough delegates to win the nomination and the party delegates would be free to nominate someone not in the primary race. Respondents in the Quinnipiac poll were asked to choose a candidate who's not in the current field. Mr. Christie has endorsed former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney.

The poll showed that 48 percent of Republican and Republican-leaning independent voters believe it would be bad for the party to engage in a brokered convention; 37 percent disagreed.

he'd be great....imagine a publican actually being strong and tough instead of the usual milk toast we see....

this world is in bad shape and we need a STRONG man for the job....

Christie would be fine with me....Rubio as VP....

sometimes its more than just policy....sometimes you just got to have STRENGTH in this world....the policies will correct themselves if we had someone who knew how to speak directly at leftist lies...

That would be a dismal choice...IMHO. I can’t stand the guy or his policies. Where some see tough...I just see a loud mouth jerk with a chip on his shoulder.

Don’t get me wrong. I think standing tough, looking tough, governing tough is the only way we get thru the mess that’s been created w/ 11 years of poor stewardship by the R’s and the D’s.

But the chap from NJ is just not who I want in the WH. And yes...I AM a Newt gal.

As a practical matter Christie probably would end up doing more to cut spending in Washington than any other Republican candidate

If he does that plus cut taxes, what's not to like? America gets a reprieve.

the guy just vetoed the gay marriage bill, balanced the budget and we’re getting a 10% across-the-board tax cut.

Looks good to me. What's not to like?

You have the right to support whomever you wish to support. I will not berate you for it. I just can't do it. I do not like christie... never did... I do not like romney... never did. I do not even like liberals of any shade.

A Conservative cannot compromise on Founding Principles. Compromise has led us to the brink of collapse. We are becoming nothing more than a modern version of Sodom. Socialism and political correctness are cancers devouring the body of Lady Liberty. The economy means nothing if it requires LIBERTY AND FREDDOM to die to exist. I would rather be a poor and free dirt farmer than a millionaire... subjugated to a Central command government. Yes, I would rather be dead than red... or as it has been more eloquently stated... in Virginia on March 23, 1775... by Patrick Henry, “Give me Liberty... or give me death”.

Once you “compromise” with liberalism... you have started the incremental path towards communism... that happened long ago in America... and we are on the threshold of Stalin's pledge today. We need someone that will govern from the Constitution... using it to guide every decision made going forward... and not to ignore it... or ignore the parts that he or she disagrees with... and christie does not have it in him.

I agree... Perry is a great man and if I had know that Palin was not going to run... I would have been far less critical of him early on. He would make a good President... flawed but then look who is left. They are all flawed... some more so than others... and some fatally and beyond acceptance.

Another so-called Republican that will never get a vote from my family or myself in the General Election.

Either the GOP puts up a conservative or they can go pound sand!

Christie is a shill for those who would put the USA in tune to Sharia law. Look at his court appointees.

Chris Christie’s record is a mixed bag, with some positive accomplishments in his home state but some views on national issues which are not particularly conservative. But I have a bigger quesstion:

What if Governor Christie becomes the nominee and suffers health problems during the campaign? You know that the stand up comics and late night talk shows will have a field day.

Christie.... NO... Let me repeat myself...NO. He is no where close to being conservative. The only thing Christie has going for himself is he is less liberal than those who have been running NJ into the ditch. Remember Corzine?

Yeah right. One skinny RINO can’t win over the base, so let’s go with a fat one, maybe that will work.

When his name comes up at the convention, we can start the discussion with asking why he appointed a radical islamist to the court in NJ.
