Republican presidential candidate Rick Santorum promised Monday to revive manufacturing, cut taxes and shrink government, pledges that drew loud applause from conservative Michigan voters who said he was more in line with their values than native son and GOP rival Mitt Romney.
Santorum's growing connection with Michigan conservatives risks embarrassing Romney in his home state. Romney was counting on a strong finish in Michigan's presidential primary on Feb. 28 to carry him into the big, multistate round of voting a week later on Super Tuesday.
But Santorum, fueled by a recent trio of victories and sensing an opportunity to upset or at least bloody Romney with a strong primary finish of his own, is charging hard at a state that he says shares many of the same characteristics as his blue-collar state of Pennsylvania. Santorum pledged Monday that, under his administration of less government and more individual freedom, "manufacturing jobs will come back here to Muskegon."

I disagree. Every election cycle we craft a message that leaves the folks in the rust belt without anything to interest them. It always focuses on nebulous concepts of Free Markets that don't resonate well with this segment. We are basically ceding these voters to the Rats who sell them on Big Gov't hand outs. This Manufacturing message is why he is starting to interest old Reagan Dems and some Union people who care about this. When it boils down to it, he is just lowering the taxes on this sector more than he lowers the rest. Not really a terrible sin. Ideally, I would love to see him zero all taxes on business for a couple years, but this is a good start.

I think that’s a key part of Santorum’s electoral appeal. Jefferson wrote of the unique American Agrarian Ideal: “Those who labor in the earth are the chosen people of God... etc”
There could also be an “industrial heart” of America that is a bit withered. I don’t want to get deep into how much economic sense it makes to incentivize manufacturing specifically, other that to say that it probably wouldn’t effect overall economics that much, and that there are natl security reasons for maintaining manufacturing proficiency, but the main thing is that it fits into the election meme that Santorum is on the side of the working man. So this will help your avg Joes, and Joe the Plumbers, rationalize, so to speak, votes for the republican, this time.
So I say all the more power to Santorum on this. And maybe it’s real. Maybe he really could revive manufacturing, and help the working man, and industrial (swing) states.

The reason our nation is going bankrupt and becoming divided against itself is because too many people are pursuing wealth through rent-seeking rather than through free enterprise.
If we reverse this trend we will reclaim our greatness, if we do not we will collapse.

“Vote for me and I will give you a special benefit not available to others.”
“Vote for me and I’ll tax the other guy instead of you.”
This approach is unworthy of free citizens of a nation under God. That is not conservatism and it just isn’t right.

Lazlo, yes, Santorum’s “Made in the USA Plan”, combined with his -heritage- (grew up in steel town I think, grandson of coal miner etc), his ability to connect to all sorts of people (as the working man), his support for labor in some cases (huge sin??), -and- his castigation of the “elites” of the O administration, will work together to make Rick shine with many fishtowners. And his position against gay marriage, protection of religion etc, will work into it also. Romney can’t match any of this.
That’s why I really hope, for at least electoral purposes in this case where it is key that we beat O, strict free marketers will give Rick a pass this once. The tax differential is needed to ... differentiate... in favor of manufacturing, so we can more easily present a case to the working man & swing states. You explained it well, Lazlo.

There is no such thing as big-government conservatism.
Depending on which of my properties I go to work on, I either drive by an empty high rise called Martin Towers, the ex headquarters for Bethlehem Steel or I go by Mack Truck headquarters which was sold to a medical outfit and the giant Bulldog out front shipped down south to their new digs. This area used to be based on manufacturing. Even though these companies are gone, the people who worked there are still around and hearing a plan to revitalize a sector of our economy that matters to them is going to work. Most of these people sound like right wingers until you get into politics and you get all sorts of mumbo jumbo on evil fat cat Repubs. I think if we had a candidate that resonated with these people, we can bring them over to our way of thinking and now would be a great time to do it. Universally, these people hate Obummer and would be easy to flip this cycle much like Reagan did.

Americans are finally seeing a candidate that takes social issues seriously. He lives a moral life which is refreshing especially in today’s world. I am so excited that this is happening. Sorry to those FREEPERS who find social issues repulsive and don’t want their love of abortions, gay marriage and putting God back in the classroom. Thankfully you are in the minority.
What some FReepers don’t recognize is that the problem is cronyism itself, not which party is organizing it. If we have two parties that both promote collectivism and industrial policy then we will continue to go broke whichever one is in charge.
What Paul Ryan, Rand Paul, Ron Paul, Marco Rubio, Mike Lee, Jim DeMint and lots and lots of other Americans are coming to realize is that collectivism and the resultant corruption are the problem and free enterprise and limited government is the one and only solution.

The quickest, most certain way to destroy America is to offer the electorate a choice between big government with abortion and gay marriage on the one hand, and big government with less abortion and no gay marriage on the other.

Even she - a diehard sociallist - sees the sense in bringing manufacturing back home. She did raise one point, though, the definition of manufacturing.
We got talking about McDonalds - cooking burgers is not manufacturing. Making them is. She was curious as to whether the 0% corp tax would be for the entire company, or just the division that actually produces and freezes the food to be cooked.
Not seen anything on this point yet. How robust will the definition of manufacturing be?

China is one of the most important countries in the world. America and China should grow and prosper together. The only way to do that is if both countries abide by the same set of rules. Unfortunately that has not yet happened.
That's why we need a zero tax rate for manufacturing activity. Manufacturing is vital, and it's disadvantaged in America because of China's policies. We need to give our homegrown industry some help.

We've tried free trade with unequal trading partners such as communist china and it didn't work. It strengthened our enemies and weakened and indebted us.
Let's try what the founding fathers did, and use tariffs to fund our government and protect our markets except where free trade really is in both countries benefit and not just the underdeveloped one.
