Warning: Photo may disturb some readers; photo of lion trophy sparks debate over legal hunting
San Francisco Chronicle ^ | 2/20/12 | Tom Stienstra

The divide between those who live in rural areas and those from cities ruptured wide this past weekend across America in a debate over a provocative photo of California Fish and Game Commission President Dan Richards and a huge mountain lion he shot legally after an 8-hour hunt in Idaho.

Some comments on Facebook suggest that Richards should be the one hunted and shot, that he should be jailed, that is unethical to shoot anything you do not eat, and hunting of any kind is barbaric.

Most from rural backgrounds would see nothing wrong with the photo. Mountain lions are predators that kill lots of deer and other animals, including house pets and farm animals, and fewer of them means more of just about everything else. Same with coyotes. Since the hunt occurred in Idaho, where mountain lion hunting is legal, there was nothing illegal about anything Richards did.

The photo first appeared in Western Outdoor News at http://www.wonews.com/Blog.aspx?id=1646 as an innocuous sidebar to a column post by Paul Lebowitz, 2010 California Outdoor Writer of the Year. The Humane Society of the United States, an anti-hunting organization, then copied and circulated the photo around the country.

So it’s an 'evil disease', but not a sin, then. Thanks.

Here's a list of sins taken from the Bible: http://www.wogim.org/sinlist.htm Search on pride/proud/vain. You might take special note of sin #648: willingly ignorant of God's Word.

“I want to hunt and shoot liberals, then pose like this guy.”

Me too.
I hope you’re as series as I am.

If you’re gonna hunt, put the animal to use and eat the damn thing.

I doubt it would taste good.

I read an interview that was done by Ted Nugent a while back in which he stated that he ate everything he killed

He also stated that he had killed his first and last porcupine ... said it tasted like a soggy creosote post.

Your Bible may list over 600 but mine lists 10.

Yours came from a bunch of men making stuff up as they went along. Mine came from God himself.

Yep. A buddy of mine owns some rather large housecats. One was sitting in his lap on the back porch, snoozing peacefully.

He then made the comment that he’s all cute and fuzzy now, but if we were the size of a chipmunk, he’d have eaten both of us long ago...

City people should STFU! If they are so plentiful that they are a problem out here then it won’t be long until their own kids start being hunted on the playground/park by mountain lions too.

By your standard, homosexuality isn't a sin either.

I read at one point that in the older days, you weren't supposed to kill porcupines, because they were to be preserved as the last-resort meal of anybody lost and hungry in the woods. They are sufficiently slow moving that they can be killed by somebody with a thrown rock.

You are 100% right...that house cat (and I love cats) at 200 pounds would find you a tasty snack...no thick hide and fur to tear off to get to the mean....we are tenderized already....

If you’re going to hunt, don’t just take an animal’s life for no reason other than your own vanity.

You obviously know nothing about hunting. It has very little to do with vanity.

The pictures maybe, not the hunt itself.

Saw one recently a local hunter bagged. It was straddling his snowmobile on his trailer. He stopped so I could take a look see. Couldn't get over how big it was - the head and paws were just massive. First one I'd ever seen other than in a zoo. They're usually pretty scrawny. This one was healthy and massive is the word that keeps coming to mind.
