SAN DIEGO -- Assembly Speaker John A. Pérez may be nowhere more popular than at a labor caucus meeting at a Democratic convention, and so it was that he received a standing ovation here this afternoon and tried out a one-liner on the crowd.

"This year you've seen Mitt Romney and others talk about the fact that corporations are people," the former labor organizer said. "I won't believe corporations are people until Texas executes one of them."

He stole that line from the signs that the OWS people carry. In fact, I discussed this very point with an Occupy person in Chicago who was carrying such a slogan. I said that I agree that corporations are not people (they are legal entities which EMPLOY people), but they are definitely capable of being executed.

Pat Quinn never executes any people, but he's sure as heck executes Illinois corporations (and for the ones he hasn't killed outright killed them, he's at least terrorized them to the point where they flee the state)!

It may be a clever line intended to confuse. However, if corporations were not considered the same as people, they would not be taxed on earnings. Those earnings would be taxed at the corporate shareholder level. The poorly educated don’t understand that.

Corporations are more "people" than unions are.

Besides, corporations euthanized for all intents and purposes by zer() include GM and Chrysler (as experienced by their bondholders), thousands of small businesses. The regulation stranglehold in every industry is choking almost all business to a near-death experience.
