Navy names USS Gabrielle Giffords
The Hill ^ | 2/10/12 | Daniel Strauss and Jeremy Herb

The Secretary of the Navy announced on Friday that a new littoral combat ship will be named after former Rep. Gabrielle Giffords (D-Ariz.).

The announcement comes the same day that President Obama signed the last piece of legislation sponsored by Giffords, a bill aimed at reducing drug trafficking along the American borders with Canada and Mexico.

Giffords, who recently stepped down from office, was the target of a shooting rampage in early January 2011.

“The name this ship bears and the story represented by that name will inspire all those who come in contact with her,” said Navy Secretary Ray Mabus at a naming ceremony at the Pentagon Friday.

Giffords appeared at the ceremony with her husband, former Rep. Ike Skelton (D-Mo.) and Roxanna Green, the mother of Christina Taylor-Green, the 9-year-old girl who was killed at the Giffords shooting last year.

Mabus said that Green would be the sponsor of the USS Gabrielle Giffords.

The ship named after Giffords is a littoral combat ship, a smaller ship designed for operations close to the shore. The USS Gabrielle Giffords is the Navy’s 10th LCS ship.

Believe it is USNS Cesar Chaves. She has a crew of civilian
mariners not military personnel

Just wait until they name the USS Obama.

Future USNS Obama, YG-69

YG is the designator for a garbage lighter. USNS, because it wouldn't be a commssioned ship, but rather a civilian crewed service ship.

I hate that she got shot, she did not deserve it. However she was not shot “In the Line of Duty” nor does she deserve any honors for such. Her job as a member of congress does not require her to perform a dangerous duty...she did not knowingly go into danger. She happened to be speaking out in public and was shot by a crazy man. Bad luck...that’s all.

Instead of naming a USS navy ship after her, which she clearly doesn’t deserve, start a charity collecting funds to build the Giffords brain trauma rehab center in her home state. That’s an honor that she would deserve and would actually accomplish something.

As much as I admire Giffords toughness and am glad my prayers were answered in regard to her recovery, if they were going to name a ship after one of Loughner’s victims they should have named her after Christina-Taylor Green or John Roll.

How about naming a ship the USA, after all we did shoot ourselves in the head in November of 2008.

In reality you’re not far from the truth, the Independence has been so plagued by problems that the Navy still hasn’t accepted it yet....this class may turn out to be a huge boondoggle.

I know this is post in the 250's but my take is this.it's political and fast and furious failed. naming a ship after this woman( bless her for recovering) sounds like some democratic ploy in an election year for her seat( don't want a conservative there because this would be bad since AZ is under attack by the Obama admin anyway).

I also think since Obama is thee CiC well he can order teh navy to do this and order them to keep his name off it and dangle military cuts in front of them; happens all the time however don't know in this case, just a thought.

Also regarding our 2nd amendment rights, I think this is a direct attack on them however subtle, someone somewhere KNOWS this will become a talking point and an isue to subvert and destroy elsewhere.

Hey read Alinsky's, Pliven's and obama's book and his library. I fail to see any other logical reason the navy would name a ship after a person injured by a freako at a signing event. It HAS to be political and probably( I can only suspect) it has to do with the anti constitutionalists especially attacking the 2nd amendment similar in fashion to having ships sent to Gaza under the guise of naming them afer the USS Liberty that attacks Israel directly and indirectly.

I think it's the same thing here and there's more to this story. Conspiracy? No, it's a blatant attack, JMHO.

The “Carolyn Bessette” would be a nice tribute to JFK Jr.

If you’re going to get ticky about it, the ship sits in the water to the point where the net upward buoyancy force is equal to the magnitude of the weight of fluid displaced by the ship.

Be in the wrong place at the wrong time, get shot, get a ship named after you.

WTF was the SecNav thinking???????

Political correctness is rampant in our DoD and it’s time to put a stop to it once and for all.

True, probably still undergoing builders trials in Lake Michigan. But just look at how much sh*& it can hold. A potful for a ship that size.
