GAB delays release of recall petitions over privacy worries (WI)

Madison - State election officials put off making recall petitions available publicly on Monday after hearing privacy concerns from people who signed them.

The state Government Accountability Board provided copies of the petitions against Gov. Scott Walker to Walker's campaign on Friday and had said that it planned to post copies of them on its website on Monday. But agency spokesman Reid Magney said the board was holding off on posting them online after hearing concerns about a stalking victim and others who did not want their names released.

Recall organizers say more than 1 million people signed petitions to recall Walker, nearly double the 540,208 valid signatures. The board has until March 19 to determine if enough signatures were filed to force a recall election.

Lt. Gov. Rebecca Kleefisch and four Republican state senators also face potential recalls. Copies of the petitions against the senators were posted on the board's website in January - just as they were last year for six Republicans and three Democrats in the Senate who faced recall.

In the past, the accountability board has treated recall petitions as public records, just as it has the routine nomination petitions that candidates must submit to get on the ballot. Making both types of petitions available has allowed the general public to verify that enough proper signatures were gathered.

On Monday, the board heard from people who did not want their information disclosed for privacy reasons, which led the board to take more time to consider the issue, Magney said. Last month the American Civil Liberties Union of Wisconsin wrote the accountability board to say if it makes a database of the names of petition signers publicly available, it should mask the names of victims of domestic abuse who ask to keep their names confidential.

There was no privacy concern about releasing the names of people who donated to the California Proposition 8, who came under severe harassment

What crap. They’ve already published the recall petitions for all the senators facing recall.

Why the privacy concerns now?

Lets see how many other places when more sensitive issues are on petitions which are signed by voters, those of the opposing view insist the names of the signers are released so the signers can be harassed and threatened by the opponents. I can’t see being as sensitive an issue as, was it prop 8 in CA or other similar petitions. I think those signing in favor of this recall are actually those more likely to harass folks who would sign a petition against recall. It goes to show that there is a lot of projection going on.

Just curious, did the GAB release last years recall petitions last year when the RATS petitioned to recall the Republican state senators?

They did.

They also released all of the recall petitions for the current efforts against 4 Republican Senators just LAST WEEK.

It’s absolutely crazy. The MacIver Institute has already announced they are filing an open records request tomorrow. They’ll win and the GAB will look even worse than they have throughout this.

Personally I think the Verify the Recall/Media Trackers/others revealing fraud in high levels on petitions already has them shaken.

We just got a new bunch of recall petitions today for Scott Fitzgerald. Now we can enter them into the Verify Recall data base.

The GAB didn’t have any privacy concerns when they turned over the recall petitions to the union thugs to paw through last year. I remember getting a call asking whether I knew I was signing a petition to recall JIm Holperin or if I was told it was for something else. I told them not only did I know what I was signing, I was circulating the petitions!
