Romney backers at Gingrich events run into political pit bull
Los Angeles Times ^ | January 29, 2012 | Seema Mehta

Reporting from Port Saint Lucie, Fla.— Dubbed the "proxies with moxie," Mitt Romney's congressional backers have been crashing Newt Gingrich's events to offer a counterpoint to the former House speaker's remarks. It's an unusual tactic to begin with, but their collisions with Gingrich's testy spokesman, R.C. Hammond, have made their sparring into the campaign trail's version of must-see TV.

Gingrich said he doesn't mind their presence, which he said is a sign of desperation by Romney.

"They send a member of Congress, we send R.C. It's a slight overmatch — R.C.'s a little bit more informed than they are, but nonetheless, it's fine with me. He can send as many members as he wants," Gingrich told reporters. "When he gets tired, we'll bring Toby back, and Toby's agreed to help R.C. take a hit."

Toby is Hammond's dog.

And that about sums up the tenor of the exchanges. Take one between Rep. Jason Chaffetz (R-Utah) and Hammond in Mount Dora on Thursday, when a discussion of a congressional ethics investigation of Gingrich turned into an aside about the Thomas system, the Library of Congress' online database.

"Do you know how to use the Thomas system? Have you looked up the report?" Hammond asked.

A bemused Chaffetz replied, "I know you're shaking, you're nervous. I know he should provide all those documents."

Hammond persisted: "So have you ever used the Thomas system to look up the report? Have you ever read it?"

"Really?" Chaffetz said. "This is what you've got to ask me? Have I looked at the Thomas system?"

Hammond continued: "Again, you haven't confirmed.....

Thats how frightened the Republican insiders are of Newt.

Makes me feel even more confident in backing him.

Thanks for the tireless efforts for the best candidate at any time - I'm still a Perry fan and have high hopes that President Gingrich will be able to utilize his abilities and perhaps prime him for a follow-on to the Gingrich Admin.

You have proven (despite what many used to claim) you aren't a mindless, single-vision anybody-bot, but are expending a lot of energy for the real conservative cause and I for one appreciate you.

I understand now why Gov. Huntsman fired him as chief of staff after 9 months.

I’m pretty sure the red-headed guy in the picture with Chaffetz and Buchanan is Romney staffer David Kochel.

It looks like him.

Romney aides David Kochel and Stuart Stevens.

Here's a picture of him on the bus in Iowa with Romney last Dec

I know they can be there, by they don’t have aright to be there - they can be banned (Gingrich’s Freedom of Association and all). It is unseemly for them to be there, and for a sitting member of Congress to be there, is just disturbing.

At the very least, since Todd endorsed Newt, he should get down there and excite the crowd. The media would pick that up.

I, like Trebb, also appreciate your efforts, your posts, and you perseverance in the face of mindless personal attacks and filthy language from some of the people on this board. I quit reading all political posts for awhile because of it and was close to deciding it was heading in the same direction as any of its DEM counterparts.

Does anyone from Taxachsetts know if Romneycare has rationing of services? I was just curious if they are that similar. If so, attack ads against Romney’s socialized medicine can really target two socialists at one time.

“Sarah`needs to fly down to FLA`today and get on the stage with Gingrich”

That sounds like a great idea but I’ll bet Palin would be jeopardizing her Foxney News contract if she did.

It’s ironic, hilarious, and of course hypocritical that Romney uses unethical means to attack Newt’s ethics. Thanks Cincinatus’ Wife.

“To me anyway, it’s beginning to look like Mormons are a collective voting block just like blacks”.

Not a chance. I don’t know one single Mormon who would vote for Harry Reid unless you count Reid’s big Mormon Family.

Also, Google “Mormons for Ron Paul” and see what comes up.

I just don’t see a collective voting block here.

I hear you saying it, but this is a personal perception thing, and based on the ones I know and read about lately, it seems the way I stated.
