A woman convicted of brutally beating and stabbing a coworker to death at the Lululemon Athletica store in Bethesda last year was sentenced on Friday to life in prison without the possibility of parole.
Montgomery County Circuit Court Judge Robert A. Greenberg handed down the sentence to Brittany Norwood shortly before 5 p.m., after hours of emotional testimony during a sentencing hearing in a packed courthouse in Rockville.
“My sympathy for your plight does not begin to approach what I feel for the Murray family,” he said to Norwood. “No matter how long I confine you for, one thing we know is you will live. There will be telephone calls. There will be Christmases. There will be visits. The only visits Jayna Murray will get are to her grave.”
The sentence came after Norwood, who did not testify during her trial, addressed the Murray family.
“I know whatever I say today won’t take the pain away for the loss of Jayna. My hope for your family is that someday you’ll be able to find forgiveness in your heart. I am truly sorry,” she said through tears. In her remarks, she never actually admitted to killing Murray.
Norwood, 29, was convicted in November of bludgeoning and stabbing 30-year-old Jayna Murray to death in the back room of the high-end yoga apparel store on Bethesda Row after they had finished a work shift together in March.
The exceptionally brutal murder — which left 331 identifiable wounds on Murray’s body — coupled with Norwood’s elaborate cover-up story grabbed headlines for months and made for a dramatic storyline that could rival many crime dramas.

I could be mistaken here, but I sort of thought that jails kind of went out of their way to make sure they didn’t have crawl spaces under them.

I read a news article a while back about this. It said that they had trouble with Norwood at another store in the chain. But, perhaps because she is a member of a protected class, and fear of discrimination lawsuits, they didn’t take personnel action against her. Instead, they transferred her to the Bethesda store, which led to the murder.
They knew she was trouble, but, they were afraid to discipline or fire her. Instead, they transferred her.

I do wonder if the way we have gone overboard with political correctness and protected classes of people, allows those classes of people to think they can get away with anything.

This is commonplace in the private sector; pass around the “hot potatoes”. I’d imagine the Bethesda manager didn’t have enough pull or sense to get out of playing babysitter to this animal. In my area, companies just hire (legal) Hispanics instead of blacks (even internal applicants); they want to work, and have no chip on their shoulders. To avoid issues with white women, they hire Asian or Hispanic women (same logic).
Depending on what type of incidents they’d had with her, the surviving family members may become quite wealthy.

Girlfriend stole some merchandise and manager-lady called her on it, so girlfriend murdered manager-lady and concocted some bizarre story about how they were both attacked in the store by a couple of guys.
Norwood is not some ghetto spawn either. Married parents; siblings are professionals including a doctor. There may even have been something to her claim that she didn’t want to disappoint her family by being caught stealing.
A moral monster, entirely self-centered and utterly disproportionate in protecting her interests. Not to mention being a fool - no way she was going to get away with this crime.

Personally “hate crimes” is not only terrible law but unconstitutional. But as long as we are stuck with it it must be applied in all cases where it can be used. Because the vast majority of “hate crimes” cases are minorities against whites.

That’s one thing I’ve noticed these days that stops good people from saying things or stopping someone who is thieving or things of that nature. People are scared of reprisals, and they also know the law likely won’t be around to save them, and also there is a general lack of trust in the judicial system.
