The Rise And Fall Of Newt Gingrich -- Speaker Was Rebel With A Cause
The Seattle Times ^ | 11/7/1998 | Eun-Kyung Kim

The mastermind behind the Republicans' dramatic return to congressional power after 40 years in the minority, Newt Gingrich commanded a conservative assault on big government to achieve his long-held dream of becoming House speaker.

...it was a disappointing GOP showing in Tuesday's election that ultimately brought him down.

He fulfilled his vision through his "Contract with America," a campaign blueprint he helped craft that called for tax cuts, welfare reform and other changes aimed at shrinking the federal government.

"When I said revolution, I meant revolution. When I said real change, I meant real change," Gingrich said in the midst of his first 100 days, as the House raced to approve one contract promise after another.

Almost instantly, Gingrich became known as one of the most vociferous Democrat-bashers in the House and the leader of a national conservative movement. For a while, Gingrich's presence as a leader was so great that rumors began to circulate about a possible run for the Oval Office.

Some perspective on Newt's time in the House from way back in 1998. This article clearly states the timing of why he left office and shows why the way Mitt Romney presents it is a lie. Also, this next article explains the frivolous ethics charges...

"Gingrich became known as one of the most vociferous Democrat-bashers in the House and the leader of a national conservative movement."

Which the current GOP is polar opposite of these days. No wonder they hate Newt.

The Byron York piece is a great source of the truth (i.e. ammunition) for Newt supporters when the Mittbots start lying. Romney’s lying during the debate (the “resigned in disgrace” meme) was despicable and puts him on equal footing with the Liar-In-Chief, Obama.

What defeated Newt as speaker were RINO’s!!!!

Actual Democraps who campaigned on Republican tickets.

Ask yourself this- Did Congrees become better AFTER he left? Or did it return to the way it was before (only worse because they leanred to manipulate the public through the media)

This time around the TEA party sees The Media as what it is - AN ENEMY that has to be defeated as much as Obama.

from the article:

“Gingrich said yesterday that he would not seek another term as speaker, ending a tumultuous tenure that in recent years has been plagued by a 1995 government shutdown and a failed coup against him by members of his own party.”

Ron Paul, who was there then, said at the last debate that the reason Gingrich decided not to seek reelection as Speaker was because Gingrich knew he didn’t have the votes.

==

I guess one has to believe whichever one sides with.

Romney’s lying during the debate (the “resigned in disgrace” meme)

That part was true.

As Ron Paul said, Gingrich resigned as Speaker because he knew he didn't have the votes to win another term as speaker.

His own party members tried to get rid of him as Speaker just a few months earlier.

FOX had Krauthammer talk about whether or not Romney’s oft-repeated ‘resigned in disgrace’ charge was true or not. Charles did a nice job explaining what was going on during that time politically & said Newt “resigned in defeat” due to no confidence as also, for example, did Maggie Thatcher. There is no shame in resigning in ‘defeat’ and it’s a far different thing than ‘disgrace’. My elderly mom was watching & she turned to me and said “Romney lied .... he LIED”. Yup.
