Gingrich won women’s vote in SC primary, exit polls show

The bombshell accusation from former Speaker Newt Gingrich’s second wife that he had requested an “open marriage” did not cost him the female vote in South Carolina, polls show.

According to exit polling conducted by Edison Research, Gingrich won a plurality of the female vote with 36 percent of South Carolina’s voting Republican women checking his box Saturday.

Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney won 30 percent, Texas Rep. Ron Paul won 13 percent, former Pennsylvania Senator Rick Santorum garnered 19 percent and Texas Gov. Rick Perry (who dropped out of the race this week) was still the choice of 1 percent of women.

Conservatives are rallying around Newt Gingrich. I support Newt. He is about to get tougher and go even harder against the GOP Elites.

It amazes me how much the homosexuals and feminists don’t want a Catholic in office. I guess it will cramp their style. LOL

That should be the final nail in Count Willard’s coffin. If, after all the marital “scandal” (half of which he paid for, I’m sure) he couldn’t win the female vote, how in the world can he win it in Florida, which is nowhere near as conservative and “Southern” as South Carolina? Yes, Florida was a Confederate state, but it has many more transplants and snowbirds than S.C. And if he couldn’t beat one of the worst major party candidates in modern history (John McCain) how in the world did he expect to beat Newt?

good lord...it is hardly about his denomination

it is his social conservatism which frankly rings with serious protestants more than catholics if stats in catholic voting and their preference for dems is any indicator

Good!

This destroys Gloria Borger's attempt to start a "women won't vote for Newt" meme at CNN's post SC debate roundtable. I believe she is CNN's chief political analyst. So much for her analysis.

I asked my wife (very educated) and her tune is she likes Santorum (I told her how Santorum screwed the conservative movement with his Spector endorsement in’04) but would vote for Newt. She has no problem with his past, it’s the future under Obama that scares her.

The good thing about Florida is, it should be a pure Republican primary. I don’t see this primary being flooded by Democrats and independents. To vote in it you had to register as Republican 30 days prior and it might be longer than that. Florida people are kind of lazy...... I can’t see thousands of jazzed up Florida Democrats and independents making the effort to vote in the Republican primary and voting for Mitt or Ron Paul.

So Florida should be a good test of Mitt versus Newt

I’m not a fan of Newt but has anyone else but me noticed that NO ONE is talking about the interview with the ex-wife today? I didn’t see the whole thing but I did see the portion about ‘open marriage’ and it was NO SUCH THING.

That was the one piece they could slant as some kind of kinky weirdo thing, and it was so completely false to anyone watching the interview, at least the segment I saw. Other than that, the whole interview was just a bunch of stuff we’ve seen and heard, so the reporter obviously had to come up with SOMEthing to justify showing it a couple nights before an election.

That interview was the worst flop of an election eve surprise since the W. drunk driving story just before the 2000 election.

If Florida is nowhere near as conservative as SC, how is that helpful to Gingrich?

Maybe women are sick of hearing how evil their husbands, fathers, sons and brothers are and punished accordingly by liberalism.

My wife, who is a very intelligent woman, is backing Newt, and the ABC hatchet job just made her angry because of its blatant unfairness and partisanship. She’s been around the block enough times to spot a bitter, angry ex-wife who’s still grinding an ax more than a decade on.

She’s also smart enough to point out the logical flaw in ABC’s claim that this “open marriage” accusation was “bombshell” new information that could sink Newt’s candidacy. She said if Marianne had something really damaging on Newt, and she was completely open about her attempt to destroy his career in an interview in Esquire two years ago, then how come she never mentioned it until now? After all, new information doesn’t suddenly appear in 12-year-old conversations. She says the very fact that she’s suddenly claiming bombshell new information that she never bothered to mention before when recounting the exact same story in detail makes her story a lot less believable, not more believable. So maybe women didn’t turn against Newt because they aren’t as stupid as the Democrats and the MSM hoped.

I wasn’t talking about the people who are voting in the Republican primaries, I was talking more about the media attacks on these candidates. Watch them hit Santorum on Gay marriage, hit Gingrich on family values, hit Romney for being in a “cult” ... The left is desperate to try to pick our candidate for us. They see Romney as less of a threat than the Catholic candidates.

Newt’s adultery while married to Marianne was already well known. Marianne had previously said that she could destroy Newt’s quest for the Presidency. So she comes out with this old story timed to do the most damage to Newt’s campaign. Consequently, Marianne came across as a vindictive b*tch which seriously undermined her own credibility and making Newt look like an underdog. Furthermore, her perceived b*tchiness provided justification for Newt’s infidelities.

Well, for one thing, it's a registered party members only primary, which tends to lean conservative vs. letting independents and Democrats vote in the GOP election. But my point was that the “scandals” didn't hurt Newt much in the middle of Dixie/the Bible Belt, so it shouldn't hurt him in Florida, which is even more cosmopolitan.

This is what the ‘civil war’ at ABC was about, not ethics (HA!) but whether or not the interview would backfire. HA! It did!

Take THAT, ABC!

“The bombshell accusation from former Speaker Newt Gingrich’s second wife that he had requested an “open marriage”.

Correct me if I am wrong. I read that his ex had severe MS. Is it possible that Newt asked for an open marriage because they could not consummate the marriage sexually? Just askin.

That is exactly how I feel. The future is a hell of a lot scarrier than anything in his past.

It also established that Newt exercised good judgment when he decided to upgrade.
