CHARLESTON, S.C. - (AP) -- South Carolina Republicans established their presidential primary more than three decades ago as way to raise the state's national political profile. They wildly succeeded.

Ever since 1980, when Ronald Reagan won, every candidate who has won the GOP primary in this Southern state of fewer than 5 million has gone on to claim the Republican presidential nomination.

In SC, Romney says he'll win some, lose some

Romney on Friday acknowledged the contest here is "neck-and-neck" and said he expects to lose "some primaries" to rival Newt Gingrich, the former House speaker.

Woo hoo!! Go, Newt!! Got him on the run!! A win in South Carolina gives you the big MO for the big WIN!!

This year is a nail-biter. I say that in a good way.

Since I campaigned for Nixon in 1972, I can't recall a better one.

I sense a turning point in America. People are attuned to the importance of the outcome. A win by the conservatives means the saving of a nation. A loss means the end of the most successful civilization in the history of mankind.

I sense it as well. Told a friend earlier yesterday that something exciting is happening here, and for the first time, I am seeing some light at the end of this tunnel. If we win and then it goes badly, if the left tries to break us, we all know what to expect and I think we are ready.

He says it has to happen here first. Then other countries in Europe and Scandinavia will follow.

After carefully and dispassionately evaluating the situation, South Carolina by all rights ought to be the leadoff state for the primaries.

It's populated by liberty-loving Christian Conservatives, embraces freedom with its Right to Work stance and had more military per capita than any other state. Genuine American values live and thrive in South Carolina. Rick Perry rightly characterized Iowa (where Obama was launched) as "quirky" and New Hampshire is RINO Central.

And when Newt Gingrich sweeps to victory and into the White House, we can thank South Carolina, the pacesetter for the nation. It really deserves to be first and foremost in the primaries.

He says it has to happen here first.

Aye.

Most other counties are already suffering.

With the right leader, we can steer through this.

I’ve said this since ‘08...

Why does the GOP allow democrats to vote in its primaries?

This should have been fixed after McCain won in ‘08.

The GOP is truly the stupid party.

Praying for South Carolina to lead us back to Reagan's principles today.

"As of Jan. 1, 2012, South Carolina counted 2,722,344 registered voters — 79% of the voting eligible population of 3,434,551. In South Carolina, voters do not register by party, so any registered voter can participate in the Republican primary."

Why don't more people complain about non-Republicans allowed to vote in a GOP primary?

I guess we are powerless to change this? Does anyone try but fail?

I spent most of my adult life as a Marine wife.

South Carolina is now my favorite state. I hated SC at first, being a Texan and longed for nothing more than Texas.

I changed my mind. Now, I miss South Carolina and it is one of the BEST states ever! South Carolina will help us out of this jam.

Go Gingrich, go SC! Though, I wish I was cheering Perry.

Going to be major egg on the faces of Haley and McDonnell if Newt pulls it off and I hope that he does.

As the article notes, some states do not register voters by party. Can we force the states to do so?

There will be. And egg it will be — they just don’t get it. Particularly annoying is this Nicky Haley figure — rode on the backs of the Tea Party all the way — until it wasn’t convenient for her anymore.

This really has separated the wheat from the chaff in a very interesting way. I’m glad for it.

Substance of the article is fine.

Misplaced modifier in AP’s lead is stunning proof that liberals are stupid and no longer able to conceal it with their scorn for those of us clinging to our guns, Bibles and old grammar textbooks.

IMHO
