Rick Santorum declines to hit Mitt Romney on Bain

SALEM, N.H. — Former Republican senator Rick Santorum, who squeaked to within eight votes of former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney in last week’s Iowa caucuses, acknowledged Monday that a second-place finish for him in New Hampshire is unlikely.

Leaving the frozen event, Santorum also declined to take a shot at Romney over a remark earlier from the front-runner that he “likes to fire” workers who are not doing a good job.

“We try to hire good people, we try to keep them employed. If someone if obviously not performing their duty and their mission, obviously a business has a responsibility for the greater good of the business and the other employees to make sure that everybody there is pulling their weight,” Santorum said.

Asked whether Romney’s corporate takeover experience at Bain Capital would be a liability, Santorum said: “I’m not making it a liability. I believe in the private sector.”

At a later campaign stop at an Elk’s Lodge in Salem, Santorum rejected the idea, posed in a question from a voter, that his outspoken opposition to gay marriage might make him less electable than Romney against Obama.

Santorum’s rising numbers in New Hampshire appear to have begun to stall after he engaged in a back-and-forth with a college student on gay marriage.

“Everyone on the stage yesterday and the day before [at the Republican debates] has pretty much the same position I have on these issues,” Santorum said. “President Obama says he has the same position I have on gay marriage. The only difference between myself and any of them is that when someone asks me a question, I answer it.”

Good. This whole Bain thing is bullshit. Bain was one of the best venture capital companies in existence with Romney leading it. It’s record on investments was actually really, really good.

It’s idiotic to see the so-called conservatives like Gingrich using lefty tactics of attacking businesses that act like businesses.

I saw him and thought he was great. He didn’t not hit Romney for political reasons, you could tell he meant it. Hope he does well tomorrow.

Santorum is gunning for the VP slot. Is he laying off Romney in an attempt to ride Mitt’s coattails?

Oh that is ridiculous. I knew from the beginning of the Bain business that using this is stupid. We are for free enterprise and sorry that some folks lost their jobs. Man you guys just want to lose to Obama. Whoever brought up this Bain crap to use to go against someone needs to drop out. What a loser issue. I cannot believe that their are folks here who are against free enterprise. Very Shocking!!!

Good for Santorum!

I despise Mitt Romney so much that it pains me to say this-especially since Perry & Newt are my top two choices at this point-but I am thoroughly disgusted that they would jump on this anti-capitalism bandwagon. There are SO many legitimate things to hammer Romney over! Why do they choose to imitate Michael Moore?

I’ve read about Romney’s record at Bain and to me it doesn’t look like anything he needs to apologize for. Looks to me like Bain turned around some companies (around 10 deals out of a total of 77 that made big turnarounds) and there were some deals that went bad. Overall, the investors made nice returns, and some companies got rebuilt, creating jobs in those industries.

My gosh, if I of all people am feeling sympathy toward that socialist flip-flopper over this, I just have a feeling this is going to backfire on Newt & Perry and Romney’s gonna come out stronger-at least with GOP primary voters. Which means we’re totally screwed, cause we’ll have Mitt going into the general, where he’ll run as the Democrat-lite and proceed to get clobbered by the real Democrat in the race.

No it’s an odd attack for the GOP primary to be involved in,
It’s a left wing argument .

Good. Newt seems like he’s gunning for Biden’s spot on the ticket and Perry is just a fool.

I really can’t believe that in the Republican party people are bashing venture capital. This is NUTS!

Why are you anti-capitalist? I am shocked. I always joked that you are a liberal but you seem to prove it daily. Bain is not an issue that should be discussed. Big deal that some people lost their jobs. There are CEOs everyday who are trying to improve their company and some people will lose their jobs for it. Gosh I am glad you are not in charge or we would have been broke already.

He’s laying off Romney on this particular issue because he’s a free market Capitalist. A nice thing to have on the non-Romney side in a GOP primary, wouldn’t you say?...

Romney has sunk from 43 to 41 to 40 to 39 to 35 to 33 over the last six days. These are two day rolling averages so the numbers are actuallt worse, iow to sink from 39 to 35 on a two day average you must poll at 31. I think he will bottom out tomorrow at around 28/29%. Paul, Huntsman, and Gingrich have been the beneficiaries while Santorum has faded one or two points. Unless the polls are wrong, which they frequently are in NH, these results will not shake the campaign up and all will survive.

BTW Naps, we ARE BROKE.

The question is, who is best suited to fix that?

I don't see, Ricky Romney getting that done.

Smart move by Santorum. Since Newt wants to play suicide bomber, let him. Perry is viewed as a joke outside of Texas. Buddy Roemer is now ahead of Perry in NH.

Yep. There is a way to go after Romney on Bain (i.e., his somewhat mediocre handling of the messaging on it thus far, and questions about whether he will be able to stand up to a full-time class warrior like Obamarxist). But the way Newt and Perry are doing it- attacking basic Capitalism, is pitiful- and revealing.
