The characterizations were priceless. The costumes were perfect. The examples of a lady’s club were on target for the time.

My daughter read the book and recommended it. I thought it would be like you describe, but it really isn’t. I thought the film showed a tremendous growth of understanding in 3 areas — race relations, child rearing, and women’s careers.

I didn’t live in the South, or was raised with servants, but I guarantee I lived some of those situations (no poo pie, however). I don’t know if you are male, or female, but a lot of ladies’ organizations were just as portrayed.

In fact, you’ve seen it in the movies before with Julia Roberts in “Something to talk about”.

I hope Medved has more guts in picking movies than he does in backing candidates.

Hugo was a nice film, but it could have been so much better.

I think Martin Scorcese was the wrong choice to direct the film. I thought he wasted some otherwise good performances by Ben Kingsley and Sasha Baron Cohen.

Frankly, you are the only other person I know that saw Hugo.

If the movie had had on screen everything said to have been done to the horses in the book, I think, that after initial word-of-mouth it would have turned off more viewers, not gained more viewers.

The barbed-wire scene was bad enough for me, and that was just the horse alone against the horrific obstacles stretched across the battlefield. Like I said, I only hope the scenes like that were “staged” and that the actor-horse did not have to suffer as his character did, just to get it on film.

Hubby and I saw War Horse yesterday. Pretty full theater too. It was a beautiful film to see, interesting, good story; but, I just couldn’t help thinking that I was watching Black Beauty if Black Beauty had gone to the French battlefields of WWI.

I was surprised at how much I liked Rise of the Planet of the Apes. I saw that one of the awards show has actually had the courage to nominate Andy Serkis for Supporting Actor for his work in Planet of the Apes. He deserves it.

I lived in Brussels for awhile and visited Paris a few times. I never before, during or since that time have had any great wonder, care or appreciation for Paris; for any reason.

This was a bad year for Hollywood.

I hate to admit it, but Midnight in Paris was pretty good, even though Woody found a way to bash the Tea Party in the film.

I won’t see War Horse because I just can’t handle the stress in animal movies. Plus Speilberg is an emotion manipulating a-hole sometimes. Can’t do it.

The new Sherlock Holmes was pretty good. Robert Downey, Jr is one of the few actors that I can support in good conscience.

Hollywood sucks. That is all.

I forgot about Rise of the Planet of the Apes. It was a great movie...until I read that the director is an admitted socialist who said the movie was his call for revolution.

Otherwise, it was great.

X-Men First Class was also good if you’re into that kind of thing.

I haven’t read the book, but the movie was so badly structured that it was an embarrassment to anyone who has any familiarity with the craft of screenwriting.

It takes us a good hour of this girl’s story before they bother to let us in on why she has to beg the government guys for money. Then, we get graphic rape scenes, too many nonsensical characters who do nothing to further the story, and moronic coincidences like her just being able to waltz into the dungeon at the end.

And on top of it, the mess is over two hours long and continues for a painful 20 mins or so after the villain dies! But the kids identify with the freak who can’t function in society, but is ‘edgy’ because she picks up random lesbians in bars and can h4x0r the gibson by typing SQL queries on her Macbook Pro.

Zallian is lucky the real world doesn’t come to take his Oscar back, but knowing the sorry state of Hollywood, they’ll probably give him another for this mess.

But I’ll tell what I really think later. :)

I saw Tinker, Tailor, Spy last Fri Nite. It was dreadful. Flat acting, too many flashbacks, too much violence, etc. I thought I was watching an unartistic version of Flying Tiger, Crouching Dragon. Nobody around me could follow it either.

The only thing that was pretty in that film was the china — Picard in Britain and something else in Hungary (maybe Herand?) For people schlepping around the underbelly of the spy world where everything was broken and grungy, they certainly had good taste in table settings.

I believe animals are pretty well protected in Hollywood these days. That wasn’t the case in the early to mid 20th century. Anytime I see an animal in an old movie on TCM, I’m pretty sure that the animal did not enjoy the making of the film.

It is reported that over 8 Million horses were killed during WW1. They were just used and abused by both sides. Some horses served on both sides of the war. It was pretty ugly.

In my opinion, WW1 was the worst of all the wars. The weaponry had advanced, but the tactics had not. Trench warfare was still the method, but was fought with tanks and poison.

I still shake my head when I think of how intent Europe has been on destroying itself for the past century.

Well, reading the books helps, and the Swedish version was pretty good, but this one was better.

It’s a “book first” film like the Harry Potter movies, especially in the sense you know the past of the main character because you know where the story is ultimately going.

I will be the first to admit that it’s not for everyone given it’s nature.

I saw Hugo. I liked it, except that it was so very sad and presented such a sad way the French raaise children. I hope that is not true, although I had a friend who lived in France in the 1960s and she sid that all the children were raised by au peres, or nannies, while the mothers did other things. She said the children were not treated well and took their frustration out on other children (Americans) that they encountered in the park.
