Mexico pours in troops after massacres, rioting

MEXICO CITY — As gangster wars rampage along the Gulf Coast and northeast Mexico, federal officials have poured in thousands more troops — an emergency move punctuated by Wednesday's slaughter of least 31 inmates in a prison gang riot.

With the region looming as this winter's primary battleground in Mexico's criminal wars, some 13,000 army soldiers, plus several thousand more marines and quasi-military federal police now patrol Tamaulipas state, which borders Texas from Laredo to the Gulf.

Bloody riot

The inmates were killed as members of rival gangs butchered one another inside a state prison in Altamira, an industrial port that forms part of the greater Tampico metropolis, officials say. Twenty other inmates were killed in a similar skirmish at a Matamoros prison in August.

But Wednesday's riot came as gunmen from the Zetas and Gulf Cartel gangs viciously battled anew for supremacy of the port city of Tampico - some 250 miles south of the border at Brownsville - and the towns and villages nearby.

'Spiral of violence'

The Altamira slaughter follows three Christmas week massacres in northern Veracruz state, within a few miles of Tampico, that claimed at least 39 lives as gunmen attacked passenger city buses and then one another in tit-for-tat attacks.

"Tamaulipas has lived terrible events," Calderon said last month in inaugurating a battallion-strength army base on the Rio Grande.

"This spiral of violence generated by organized crime isn't at all a problem that surged from one day to the next," the president said. "It's an affliction that developed through the decades and that today shows its true face of evil."

Wait until all the gangsters head this way trying to escape Mexican Justice. There will come a time when the citizens in Mexico are sick of this and chase them out. Thank God that southern border is wide open. /sarc

I wonder how many of the guns being used were “walked” into Mexico by the esteemed Mr. Holder.............

Won’t happen for the same reason that the folks in North Korea, Nazi Germany and communist Russia never rose up against their repressive governments.

Who do you think has the weapons in Mexico?
