Using an octopus is nothing new. I have seen several pictures from the 1800s in which either bankers or Railroads are depicted as a large octopus grabbing up everything around them.
There was a novel written about that time, THE OCTOPUS, about how a greedy railroad company getting robbed by an outlaw. The Octopus wins, but the Chairman of the board dies a horrible death.

It reminds me of a Frank Zappa song. Something about a giant inverted ice cream cone with mean eyes and a 2X4 sticking out from under neath it. All that is missing is the distressed woman screaming and the guy with the skinny tie and a revolver shooting at it.
