Thousands were promised spots first in line for special visas to the U.S., but the process has slowed to a crawl. Now the Iraqis, targeted for death because of their service to America, can only wait.
Reporting from Baghdad— He rarely leaves his house. He's been shot at by gunmen in a passing car. He gets death threats over the phone.
"Traitor," the callers say. "American agent."
Tariq, 27, is a quick-witted, tech-savvy Iraqi who tosses off idiomatic American English phrases such as "I'm outta here" and "That's cool."
When he served as an interpreter for the U.S. military, Tariq lived on a secure base, safe from fellow Iraqis determined to kill him because of his service to America. But when the unit he served pulled out of Iraq on Oct. 13, he was dismissed and escorted off the base.

Unfortunately, this happened in Vietnam and both conflicts in Iraq (see Kurds in Round 1 - and guys like this in Round 2). Any Afghan citizen that can read who has helped us should know his fate when we leave.
Sad, but predictable. I am not a fan of the whole “hearts and minds” and nation building emphasis but anyone who believes we honor our word does not understand the fickle nature of our nation and leaders.
If you ever want to hear deep bitterness just chat with the Special Forces guys who worked and fought besides the Hmong against the North Vietnamese and Communist. Terrific fighters who were the best of allies abandoned to slaughter by the Communists when we refused to win.
Why anyone would trust our word anymore is beyond me.

It is call the CEO mentality. You work hard to help my company profit, thank you but I just found a cheaper replacement. Bye Bye. How does it feel to be treated like a condom??!!! If the business world does it, why do we expect the gov (their protector and crony) to act any different to foreigners who serve us at great peril. Until institutions in the US (private and gov) learn to take care of the people who took care of them, this vicious American trait will stain us every time. Ironically the average American on the street does not behave like this, it is the people on the top (1 percent) that acts like this.
Do we really need more Muslims here? Won’t they just become terrorists?

While serving as an Intel Specialist with the USAF in Nam, we used Vietnamese Army Interpreters to debrief Chieu Hoi (Open Arms) Returnees; those who gave up and sought clemency and were housed in camps.
Though I spoke French and some Vietnamese, we used these Interpreters as we wanted to get the best Intel possible...and we did develop some good stuff from some of them.
After 18 months we got to know them pretty well and developed and fairly close relationship, thus after we bugged out, all of those who "collaborated" with the eeeevil US Forces were targeted for arrest, imprisonment or worse.
I often wondered what happened to the handful I knew as well as the thousands of others who made the mistake of "trusting" us and believed we would not cut and run and leave them holding the short end of the stick!
