“The way things are going in the United States, we can no doubt look forward to the day when Americas naval fighter jets are piloted by lesbians and powered by whale sh*t.”
The Navy flag officers do seem to be marching in step with the Obama direction. This past week the press covered broadly the “first kiss” of two lesbians when the USS Oak Hill came home. Now they are purchasing biofuels at a huge premium from politically connected “green” companies. The politicization of the military is well underway.
Gov't mandated gas stations...gotta love them.
Good Grief!
Click on pic for past Navair pings.
Post or FReepmail me if you wish to be enlisted in or discharged from the Navair Pinglist.
The only requirement for inclusion in the Navair Pinglist is an interest in Naval Aviation.
This is a medium to low volume pinglist.
Jet fuel flash points vary greatly. Both Jet A and Jet A-1 have flash points between 100-151 °F, close to that of off-the-shelf kerosene 100162 °F. Yet both Jet B and JP-4 have flash points between -9 and 30 °F. Diesel fuel flash points vary between 126 and 205 °F. Biodiesel flash point is 266 °F, Yes the U.S. Navy should use Biodiesel, in the Boilers of the ships not in a multi-million dollar Jets with lives at stake. Oh and not at $ 26.00 per gallon, Hell NO! why not use perfume; make the whole world smell better.
“boilers” ?????
Almost all Naval surface ships have either Gas Turbine engines OR diesel engines. Boilers are, for the most part, a thing of the past.
“Steam plants” are now essentially synonymous with nuclear power ships.
BUT - concept is valid. These fuels could be used on diesel plants or ships with gas turbines - because a fuel-related problem on an aircraft is far more significant than for a surface ship. OR - let the bio-fuel be used exclusively with auxiliarys/small craft/support vessels in and around Naval Bases and shipyards. Their consumption is significant enough to provide a good testing....but should only be embarked upon if pricing isn’t ridiculous. Maybe 2 times is a place to start ...but 3 x or more - NO WAY!!
The biofuel, made from a blend of used cooking oil, will be mixed with aviation gas or marine diesel fuel for use in the âGreen Strike Groupâ demonstration, according to the departmentsâ release. It is a âdrop-in fuel,â which means that no modifications to the engines are required to burn the fuel. To prepare for the demonstration, the Navy completed testing of all aircraft, including F/A-18, blue Angels and the V-22 Osprey. It also tested the RCB-X, a command boat.

Hmmm.... Swedish riverine boats, where have we heard about those in the news lately...
(snip) The USN sailors departed Iran's Farsi Island, a sensitive location home to an Iranian navy base, at 08:43 GMT aboard the two CB90 Riverine Command Boats (RCBs) that they had been operating, the Pentagon said. ...A senior defence official said the USN had "lost contact with two small US naval craft en route from Kuwait to Bahrain". It was not clear what had led to the lost communications or a reported mechanical failure in one of the craft....The CB90 Riverine Command Boat is a Swedish-designed riverine patrol craft. --- http://www.janes.com/article/57173/iran-briefly-detains-10-us-navy-sailors-on-farsi-island
Speaking of Sweden, the Swedes seem to have awful strong interests in Iran, and Hillary with both. And the Clinton Foundation as well as Obama have been on the receiving end of a lot of donations from the same biofuels company involved in the Navy green fuels program:
Clinton Fdn raised $26 mn in Sweden as govât lobbied Hillary on Iran sanctions â report ------- https://www.rt.com/usa/264793-clinton-foundation-sweden-iran/
If green fuels are so awesomw, why hasn’t Kerry persuaded Iran to give up nuclear in favor of algae?
Newer piezo injectors on diesel engines DO NOT SURVIVE on biodiesel ..... Older diesel engines with mechanical injectors can run on biodiesel after they are warmed up. I’ve a old 4BT Cummins swapped into 88 Toyota 4x4 that run good in 40 -100 degree weather on locally made biodiesel. First time I left it out in winter it was a “ngreasesickle” till I thawed it in the shop for a few days and flushed the fuel system with regular diesel..... I vote no on reliable biodiesel unless they have overhauled the formula extensively...
My experience.... your mileage may vary ......:o)
I have heard that adding some acetone will help alleviate this problem....................
