VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (AP) -- A Navy tradition has caught up with the repeal of the "don't ask, don't tell" rule on gays serving openly in the U.S. military. The Navy said two women shared the coveted "first kiss" Wednesday when the USS Oak Hill returned home to its Virginia base. Marissa Gaeta of Pacerville, Calif., descended from the ship and shared a quick kiss with her partner, Citlalic (SEET-lah-leek) Snell of Los Angeles. The crowd screamed and waved Navy flags around them. Both women are fire controlmen in the Navy. They met at training school and have been dating for two years. Naval officials said it was the first time on record that a same-sex couple was chosen to kiss first upon a ship's return.

My uncle was a radioman stationed at Mare Island in SF.
Said that he was in demand when on a pass because he was tall and good looking. When the fleet was out, there weren't many men in the city, and he would "escort" women - usually to weddings.
Said that he enjoyed the companionship and the food. Also, he had to have a shipmate explain the concept of what a gay man was to him, because as a small-town boy from the backwoods of Maine, that wasn't much of an issue. :-)Apparently, that was an issue in SF even in '44-'45.
It was a different, much simpler time. :-)
I remember once when we returned to Norfolk, a guy in our division had his wife show up with her new Boyfriend, told him she wanted a divorce and took his kids...I’d rather see two women kiss than him after that happened.
Just goes to show, there’s always something worse.

I always thought those Wave uniforms were hot. They still are.
I was overseas when I was told by my mother in law that her daughter wanted a divorce because she had met someone else. It wasn’t long before I realized it was the best thing that she could have done for me.
I also had a friend who was sending his every one of his paychecks to his girlfriend for 9 months. When we got home the apartment where he’d been sending the checks was empty and she was long gone with another man.

The military is now just a jobs program. The actual work of the military are done by very few people. The US is now dependent on “Special Forces” and high technology only.
