VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (AP) -- A Navy tradition has caught up with the repeal of the "don't ask, don't tell" rule on gays serving openly in the U.S. military. The Navy said two women shared the coveted "first kiss" Wednesday when the USS Oak Hill returned home to its Virginia base. Marissa Gaeta of Pacerville, Calif., descended from the ship and shared a quick kiss with her partner, Citlalic (SEET-lah-leek) Snell of Los Angeles. The crowd screamed and waved Navy flags around them. Both women are fire controlmen in the Navy. They met at training school and have been dating for two years. Naval officials said it was the first time on record that a same-sex couple was chosen to kiss first upon a ship's return.

My mom (now 90 yrs old) was a WAVE stationed in Annapolis in WWII and briefly married to a B-29 pilot who went down over Holland. Her job was in the film dept and the place was overrun with Hollywood celebs (she fondly recalled taking the bus in with Gene Kelly singing and dancing all the way) - but she mentioned one time that a notorious hollywood lesbian came in and grabbed one of the girls and gave her a kiss and the room just froze. She wouldn’t tell me the name of the actress, but used to say “You’ve seen her in films for sure.”

“And the crowd went wild”? What propaganda.

My thought exactly.

The crowd went wild, the last time I walked into a Carolina Panthers game, too. Of couse, Steve Smith catching a touchdown pass right at that point in time too, had nothing to do with it.

I hate the MSM. They don't even pretend to be unbiased, anymore.

My mother did the same job as my father in Chatham, Massachusetts.

However, I do agree with you about women on warships. It's really insane to ignore or deny the natural differences and tendencies of men and women.

Women don’t belong on combatant vessels

The navy already knows this. They're just not allowed to point it out. From Fred on Everything.

See my post 106. The military is managing to do just that.

Pretty darn interesting. Fred has supporting documentation for what I know. :)

I’m as straight as can be.

She was a sweet girl. I should have stayed with her. My life would have been a lot better ‘cause I wouldn’t have married old “what’s her name”.

"There were no non medical female sailors until mid 70’s."

My mom was a WAVE during WW2. She was trained at Hunter College and stationed at Treasure Island, San Francisco.

Don't know how to post a personal picture, but she wore a uniform like the ones worn in this picture. Without the strips because she was not an officer.

:-)

You know it, and I know it, but "Common Sense" and "Politics" are usually divorced from each other.

I did like the statistics. It's one thing to say "Men, in general, are stronger than women (duh)", and quite another to say "Women fail x% more often than men at the following shipboard requirements: ....".

I also liked Fred's commentary. "Women are supposed to take on the NK infantry, but can't go to the bathroom by themselves?". Makes me laugh everytime I think of it.

For awhile, Fred wrote columns on anecdotes submitted by men in the military. They're all on that same site.

Chosen?? No barf alert needed with that title. Next will be a sailor with his or her dog.

Women were not allowed in the Navy until after '73.

I was in the navy in 1970. I'm pretty sure those sailors in skirts were women. I thought the WAVES went back to WWII.

FWIW - My grandmother was one of the first women officers in the US Navy. The Navy Nurse Corps was founded in 1908. She wasn't one of the original "Sacred Twenty" but was commissioned a Lieutenant in 1911. It was still a very small group. I have her commission in a box around here somewhere.
