Russia seizes radioactive Sodium 22 bound for Iran
ABC news ^

Posted on 12/16/2011 5:23:46 AM PST by jyro

Russia has seized a consignment of the radioactive isotope Sodium-22 at a Moscow airport from a passenger who was to travel on a flight to Tehran, the customs service said on Friday.

"Tests showed that the Sodium-22 could only have been obtained as the result of the work of a nuclear reactor," it said in a statement.

"A criminal enquiry has been opened and the materials transferred to prosecutors."

Russia should be just as concerned about Iran as we should be.

Although Iran plays “nice” to Russia right now, a casual perusal of recent history includes many Islamic Terror Attacks on Russian soil.

Radical Islam is the enemy of ALL civilized people...and even those who are not so civilized.

What would the Iranians use Na-22 for? Is it used in nuclear triggers? What is its decay path?

Sounds like an Iranian dirty bomb which finds
permanent site in human extracellular tissue.
If true, ...

So what this proves beyond a doubt is that there are in fact nuclear reactors creating Na-22 in Russia!

So?

Had it not been for Russia, iran would have had nukes a long time ago.

They do have a much more effective way of dealing with terrorists, don’t they?

It generates positrons. Quite penetrating. Very dangerous to living creatures. Highly soluble in body fluids. No mention of use for bomb triggers.

Bomb triggers must emit neutrons. IIRC, polonium was used for this purpose in Fat Man device.

Russia and China both love to stick it to America using Iran as a proxy. Saner minds in each country must realize that Iran can turn on a dime and put them in the soup, too.

dirty bomb material

Nonsense. There are reactors known to be running in Iran right now..."for peaceful purposes."

The material that was in process of being further refined in the centrifuges that Stuxnet destroyed was still pretty radioactive junk that could be used in a dirty bomb.

Not enough material carried on one person to be worth a damn in a dirty bomb.

This doesn't make a complete story.

“Bomb triggers must emit neutrons. IIRC, polonium was used for this purpose in Fat Man device. “

Po is an alpha emitter, and they mix it with beryllium. The alpha-be reaction generates neutrons.

I’m not aware of a positron reaction resulting in neutrons.

How much Na22 could this person have had?

Did a quick chesk and Na22 is used as a check source or calibration device. You could possibly use it in metallurgy.

Na 22 is the best and most common source of positrons http://www.positronannihilation.net/index_files/Positron-Sources.pdf and is produced for instance by proton irradiation of Aluminum.http://www.freepatentsonline.com/5487880.html or from irradiation of Mg by deuterium. http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/0020708X57902715 If it was only Sodium 22 it is not a big cause of concern. However the way it was transported was strange.

It is not healthy to eat, http://hpschapters.org/northcarolina/NSDS/22NaPDF.pdf The biological half life is 11 days so I anticipate that if you want to poison someone, and get a lethal effect, there are better substances.

Right. The "urchin." I vaguely recalled they mixed it with something else; thanks for reminding me.

Anyway, I don't think positrons can be used to make neutrons, at least not quickly. Positrons are anti-electrons, right? They'll annihilate electrons that surround an atom before they get near the nucleus. Which, being positively charged, would repel them like crazy if one did make it through the electron shells.

Also, the masses are all wrong. A positron is, like, one two-thousandth the mass of a neutron.

Neutrons are the key. They're nasty.
