AUSTIN, Texas The Texas comptroller said Monday that the economic recovery is taking hold, producing higher than expected tax revenues and possibly resulting in a budget surplus in 2013. In a letter to the Legislature, state Comptroller Susan Combs said tax collections were on pace to produce a $1.6 billion budget surplus for the fiscal biennium ending in 2013. That means the state could earn $82.7 billion over the next two years, while the 2012-2013 budget is only $81.1 billion. That represents an 8.2 percent increase in state revenues over the 2010-2011 budget cycle.

Perry for president :)
The list, Ping
Let me know if you would like to be on or off the ping list
It’s good to live in Perry’s Texas.
Geez Perry and the Repub Leg ended the recession in Texas.
All the producers are moving down here. I’m still shocked at how many businesses are opening here then seeing other parts of the country collapsing.
There were some accounting tricks, but overall they chose to reduce government spending to a level that the economy could sustain, rather than raising taxes.
States that made that choice are on the road to recovery. The ones that didn't are still basket cases.
The Democrats screamed, but the sky didn't fall.
There's an important lesson to be learned, but the important policy makers -- especially in the federal government -- will refuse to accept it.
Another cool thing here,,,the state govt is fairly accessible to the average citizen. The Williamson County Republican Women have routine lunches with Susan Combs to discuss her work and her office. In fact, she was the guest at the December luncheon Pretty much anyone can go and it’s not that swanky or expensive ($15 per person). http://williamsoncountyrepublicanwomen.com/
When they force online businesses to start collecting sales tax on internet sales for other states the states will be back in fat city.
I’m no Constitutional lawyer but it would appear on the surface that the forced collection of such taxes between states impacts the Interstate Commerce Clause.
My view is that it will hurt the economy and business and not help the brick and mortar stores because it adds costs to consumers.

I’m a teacher. They were telling me to my face that I would be worse off with this budget.
Maybe for the year, sure. But after that when the books come back on budget? I’d be much, much better off.
TX rules.
That's what happens when other states make it unfriendly for business to do business. So, businesses pack it up and leave and then their state is less that tax revenue. It's typical liberalism coming back to bite them in the ass.
IF you'd rather NOT be pinged FReepmail me.
IF you'd like to be added FReepmail me. Thanks.
Where’s dragnut?
He should be here soon to tell us it’s all baloney.
Education is one of the biggest -- if not the biggest -- categories in the Texas budget.
It's foolish to think that any substantial cuts can be made in total spending by the state of Texas without also making cuts in education spending.
That's life. We all have to make those hard decisions in our own budgets. Making education into a "sacred cow" sounds appealing, but all it does is institutionalize over-spending.
That's the real problem with the federal budget. The percentage of "discretionary" spending is very small, in relationship to all the "sacred cows". And until we are willing to at least shave some of those cows or stop fattening them further, we'll never get control of the deficit.
Good,
This will help us afford Governor Perry’s Dream Act.
I’d hate to be thought of as ‘heartless’.
I’m thinking that you’re lucky to have such a great governor and state legislature.
This news is going to surely piss off the Food Stamp President and his progressive lackeys. I can see investigations by Eric the Bigot, Lisa Jackson doubling down on EPA regulations, Slow Joe being sent down to give Summer of Recovery advice, etc. Heads are going to roll.
Good for us. We never were hit with this recession like a lot of states were.
As a small business owner, I am still not happy with his Franchise Tax. Essentially a state income tax. Perry isn’t the consummate conservative.
“Im thinking that youre lucky to have such a great governor and state legislature.”
We wish it. We have a TWO THIRDS in the state House and Senate, and we can’t get jack done with regard to conservative causes. For starters, Alabama and Arizona have passed anti-Illegal laws with TEETH in them. We coddle those same people.
