Hu Jintao tells China navy: Prepare for warfare

China's navy should speed up its development and prepare for warfare, President Hu Jintao has said.

He told military personnel they should "make extended preparations for warfare".

China is locked in territorial disputes with several other nations in the South China Sea. Political tension is also growing with the US, which is seeking to boost its presence in the region.

After Mr Hu's comments, the US said China was entitled to defend itself.

"Nobody's looking for a scrap here," said Pentagon spokesman Admiral John Kirby in quotes carried by the AFP news agency.

"Certainly we wouldn't begrudge any other nation the opportunity to develop naval forces."

Senior US and Chinese officials are currently holding talks on military issues.

The one-day meeting takes place every year, with the stated aim of ensuring there are no misunderstandings between the two nations. 'Sovereignty dispute'

China has recently acquired its first aircraft carrier and has been vocal about its naval ambitions.

But its military remains primarily a land-based force, and its naval capabilities are still dwarfed by the US.

Mr Hu told a meeting of military officials that the navy should "accelerate its transformation and modernisation in a sturdy way, and make extended preparations for warfare in order to make greater contributions to safeguard national security".

The word "warfare" was used in official media, but other translations used "military combat" and "military struggle".

Analysts say Mr Hu's comments are unusually blunt, and are likely to be aimed at the US and Beijing's rivals in the South China Sea.

They don’t need a military to cripple America all they need to do is start an embargo.

An embargo of the US? Literally impossible.

No, all they'd have to do is call in our debt.

Very true too....call in the debt, but they won’t be that ...ummm bold, brash, etc.?

But, without our manufacturing base here and pretty much shipped overseas all they would need to do the stop electronics shipments...said done over within a matter of months.

Couple that with their oil allies and man ...we’re done.

The US should maintain the ability to produce vital war materials especially chips and chip sets. You cannot rely on your enemy for your weapons.

China can not call in debt on T-Bonds.

Since we are so politically correct ("culturally Marxist" is the old term), we cannot openly admit to such scary things as that... and apparently, we have to cry like little girls whenever anyone else of some strength does openly admit that fact... which makes us looks even more inept and incapable of defending ourselves.

When China starts her March to Empire—she will move west and south (as they have in the past). They have Tibet now and see what they have done to that once peaceful land. She will go towards Vietnam and her islands, move on Taiwan with a swift take over —all this before Obama is out of office! 2012 will be a year of war. Look to see China move towards Mongolia as well as North Korea. China will move towards the oil resources. For this she needs a navy—she was built one and now is thinking of ways to use it.

Nah, I guess I was using hyperbole, sorry. I have been beyond infuriated at Obama foreign policy for so long that it’s tough not to become dispirited. I guess my remark was an expression of the internal frustration that Obama’s gaffes are inducing.
