The world's oldest living dog has died in Japan at the age of 26 - the equivalent to more than 125 human years.
Pusuke, a male cross breed, died peacefully on Monday afternoon at Sakura in Tochigi prefecture.
He was recognised by the Guinness Book of Records in December last year as being the oldest living dog on the planet. . . .
Pusuke was born in March 1985. The previous record was held by a 28-year-old beagle which died in the U.S. in 2003.

According to Homer, Odysseus’ dog Argus lived well over 20 years.

... As they were speaking, a dog that had been lying asleep raised his head and pricked up his ears. This was Argos, whom Odysseus had bred before setting out for Troy, but he had never had any enjoyment from him. In the old days he used to be taken out by the young men when they went hunting wild goats, or deer, or hares, but now that his master was gone he was lying neglected on the heaps of mule and cow dung that lay in front of the stable doors till the men should come and draw it away to manure the great close; and he was full of fleas. As soon as he saw Odysseus standing there, he dropped his ears and wagged his tail, but he could not get close up to his master. When Odysseus saw the dog on the other side of the yard, dashed a tear from his eyes without Eumaeus seeing it, ...
"This dog," answered Eumaeus, "belonged to him who has died in a far country. If he were what he was when Odysseus left for Troy, he would soon show you what he could do. ... Argos passed into the darkness of death, now that he had seen his master once more after twenty years.

Should the story be titled: “World’s oldest KNOWN living dog dies at 26? My guess would be that in this world of hundreds of millions of dogs, somewhere there is likely some that are older.

Pusuke was a beautiful dog. A blessing to her family, no doubt.

My uncle (who worked in the Richmond, CA Shipyard during WWII)brought home a tiny Shiba puppy in his coat pocket to his daughters one night after work. The pup was part of a litter that had been taken off of a captured Japanese ship when the ship and its POWs had been towed to shore.
The family named the dog Judy and she was loved and lived many years through many adventures. I know she was over 20 when she died. She was a great dog, and every time a person of Japanese descent saw her, they made a big fuss over her.

Thanks for posting that. It has been nearly 50 years since I read the Iliad and Odyssey but I still remembered about Argus, oops, Argos.
