Video: Storeowner shoots would-be robber(CT)

NEW HAVEN -- A would-be robber got more than he bargained for after an attempted stickup in New Haven.

Every time the owner of Babe Market, 22-year-old Karar Jawad, walks in to work, he immediately puts his gun behind the counter. He never thought he'd have to use it, but he did on Tuesday night when two masked men walked in.

Jawad said he shot one of the men in his chest. A surveillance video obtained by the New Haven Independent shows Jawad firing shots from behind the counter. The robbers are off camera in the video.

"I'm glad he's going to survive," said Jawad. "I didn't want to shoot him, but my life was threatened."

He said the life of his customer was also in danger.

"They had a gun to the customer. When they had the gun they to the customer, they said to me, `Give me your money.' I had my gun over here, so I pulled it out slowly and he pointed the gun right here on my chest and I just let off shots, a couple. They took off," Jawad recalled.

New Haven police said the man who was shot showed up at the hospital around 10:30 p.m. He's expected to survive.

"I was scared," said Jawad. "I literally blacked out."

Jawad said the men stole the customer's wallet, but no items or money were taken from the store.

Police took the gun and said it could be a while until he gets it back. Jawad told News 8 that he can't risk waiting for police to give him back his gun, he's going to get a new one.

Jawad told his close friend, Keith Barnes, that the two men looked young. Barnes says it's not surprising.

"Nobody wants to open up a store at seven o'clock in the morning and not make it home to their family, so what he did was justified," said Barnes.

Jawad is hoping that in the new year with a new chief who's committed to community policing, that there will be less gun violence.

Dangerous neighborhood, and the police took his gun. Everyone should have a backup or a friend who will provide one. You should not be disarmed after having to defend yourself. Criminals have associates, relatives, and gang members who might be looking for revenge.

While will it me a while or “some time” before he gets his gun back?

1) Is it his gun legally?
2) Was this the gun that shot the perp?
3) Did he shoot the gun?
4) Was he acting in self defense?

Is the gun evidence to be kept for a potential trial?

They should purchase the weapon from him for $1,000. Then they can keep it.

*Police took the gun and said it could be a while until he gets it back*

This doesn’t sound like a good plan. Maybe it’s part of police procedure.
Even worse is the fact that the paper announces that the victim is now unarmed.

Something tells me the sleaze law in CT will prevent him from buying another gun until after the case is closed. His rights may also be altered negatively until case closes too. He needs to borrow one, legally of course.

Doubtless the police will run the serial number and ballistics to see if it was used in any other shootings as well as keeping it in evidence lockup should there be a trial. Pretty much SOP.

Guns are a big seller on Black Friday
by Kevin Johnson on Dec. 01, 2011, under USA Today News

In addition to the sleek flat-screen televisions, smartphones, computers and cut-rate designer clothing, Black Friday’s shopping legions seized on another hot item for 2011: guns.

Gun dealers flooded the FBI with background check requests for prospective buyers last Friday, smashing the single-day, all-time high by 32%, according to bureau records.

Deputy Assistant FBI Director Jerry Pender said the checks, required by federal law, surged to 129,166 during the day, far surpassing the previous high of 97,848 on Black Friday of 2008.

It's important to have more than one gun, and in more than one place. At minimum, you should have two guns at home, plus a third you keep either at your parents house or in a bank safety deposit box. The reason for the third is that if you are involved in a shooting at home, the cops may demand all the guns in the house (I have read of instances where it happened).

Fairhaven ain’t the most family oriented part of the world. I’ve lived in CT near New Haven all my life, and I don’t think I’ve EVER been there.

Looks to me like the perp waved something like a Ruger .22 at the owner and fired it before being taken out. Also looks like the owner had good presence of mind and maneuvered well to gain the advantage.

If he hasn’t been charged with a a crime, I would expect he is free to buy a replacement weapon. This time, choose a .45, buddy.

It's part of police procedure in many places. They will keep the gun as "evidence", and they will hold onto it until either all trials are over (if you're lucky) or until you have your lawyer get a court to force them to turn it over (and the legal bill would likely be more then the value of the gun).

Best to just assume that if you need to use it, you will lose it, and have more than one gun, at more than one location.

Sent the link to the article to Drudge with the comment: “Another case of firearms used for self defense ignored by the MSM”

If we send enough of these, there’s the possibility that Drudge will pick up on it and start routinely reporting them, since the MSM refuses to do so, and he likes tweaking them.
