LET'S GET REAL: A Newt Gingrich Nomination Would Be A Disaster For The Republican Party
Business Insider ^ | 112811 | Michael Brendan Dougherty

Newt Gingrich is now suddenly the candidate to beat Mitt Romney. And conservatives are said to be "salivating" at the chance of watching him debate President Obama.

But the truth is that a Newt Gingrich nomination would be a disaster for the Republican party: He cannot win.

And it would be a major setback to conservative causes, because Newt Gingrich tarnishes the right's ideals with his obvious corruption.

Let's take those two one at a time.

He cannot win:

The New Hampshire Union Leader credits Newt Gingrich with engineering the 1994 Republican Revolution when Republicans took their first majority in Congress in 50 years and Newt ascended to the role of Speaker.

But Gingrich deserves more credit for ship-wrecking that Revolution. Within just two years, Newt Gingrich shut-down the government and his approval rating dropped to just 25 percent. It never recovered.

By 1997, Gingrich was facing dozens of ethics charges. Although many of them were dismissed, he was fined an unprecedented $300,000 by the House Ethics Committee (still run by Republicans at the time), and admitted to giving "inaccurate, incomplete and unreliable statements were given to the committee." Newt did this precisely during a time he was trying to impeach the president for perjury.

I will crawl over broken glass to vote for Newt over Obama.

If it’s Romney, it had damn well better not rain on election day.

I actually met Newt this morning here in Charleston.

The event was a relatively informal speech followed by a q&a session.

I like Newt’s ‘21st century contract with america’ - nice to see a candidate act like an adult - pledging action versus ‘me me I I I me me me’.

My impression was he has the knowledge and brains and experience we need in our next president.

My concern is does he have what it will take to overcome $1,000,000,000 worth of lies and an uber-lefty media?

wrong!!! The media grilled Newt and served him on a platter to Clintoon.

That is why Newt has taken on the media as his first opponent. He has their number and they are skeered.

Clinton knows that Newt made him look good on policy and the economy - and Clinton still takes the undeserved credit.

Newt has found his voice as an individual - no longer beholden to the GOP elites. They stabbed him in the back after he carried them on it for years. He has their number and they are skeered.

New candidates for the House and Senate should look to Newt to carry them in the GOP primaries and on to victory. He will get their number and they will be elected also.

Gingrich is an unelectable RINO

I'm a Perry supporter, but this term RINO gets thrown around way to easy. Gingrich is not always the strongest conservative, but don't forget he led the Pub party out of the wilderness and gained a majority in the House for the first time in a couple generations. He is solid on supporting Life. He believes in a strong defense. He balanced the budget and reformed welfare. After he was forced out the Pubs never did anything big again.

I don’t think the DEMS are afraid of Newt as much as real conservatives are afraid of Newt.

Sorry but I'm right and you make my arguement for me. Clinton sliced and diced Newt and the media passed the relish! I like Newt...I give him FAR more credit than most around here for his accomplishments as Speaker. I know who pushed through welfare reform, who was responsible for balancing the budget and how the surplusses were created. But Clinton still gets the credit because when the media turned their guns on Newt he fed them ammo. I'm afraid a Newt candidacy will be a disaster. I'll vote for him but I won't expect a victory in 2012.

Newt just needs to take New Hampshire. That is Romney’s strong area.

And even if Gingrich did take the other three, Gingrich is far, far better than Romney.

Well said!!! Newt was showing the world what conservative leadership looked like in a post-Reagan world while a lot of these pups were still in diapers!

Anybody out there remember how the MSM blasted Reagan and tried to brainwash the country into thinking that he didn’t have a chance to be POTUS?

The problem is that Newt will bring us 4 more of Obama, not that he will
be worse, but that he will NEVER be elected with the stupid people that
vote today!!!!!!

My only fear about Newt is what I like to call the likability factor.

I'm not sure that's necessary this time around. I think people are looking for the competancy factor. Government has become so incompetant that everyone is looking for someone who sounds like they can straighten out the mess.

2. I’ll hire the right people who will tell me what I should do, and

Said as slowly and as precisely as possible to take the most time off the clock so it looks like he actually said something.

The latest poll says that Newt Gingrich is killing Romney in New Hampshire. If Mitt loses Iowa, loses, New Hampshire, loses South Carolina, then he is finished.

I would love to see the race come down to Perry vs. Newt. I prefer Perry, but I would vote for Newt over obama any day of the week.

You’d think the Cainiacs would have enough love for America to blast Newt AFTER Newt rids us of Romney.

I really think Cain is done. He started out as a breath of fresh air with his candor. However, it's clear he has not thought through the issues. His Pro-Choice position on abortion (it's a family's decision) is just one example.

The question the Cain supporters have to answer is who is the best conservative going forward.

I voted for mccain because of Palin... and gave them $2500.00 to boot. How much did you give them? I got screwed royally... paid $2500.00 and still got a communist muslim usurping fag as president. Worked out really badly voting for mccain and donating to the rino bastard... it sucked!

Romney will get us 4 more years of Obama.

Gingrich can and will beat him. The independents will flock to him in droves.
