Opponents of Alabama’s immigration law say it causes fear, anxiety
Boston Herald ^ | November 24, 2011 | Uriel J. Garcia / Cronkite News Service

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — If the goal of state immigration laws was to make life so uncomfortable for illegal immigrants that they leave on their own, it may be working under HB 56 in Alabama.

"HB 56 has caused a chain reaction that prevents Hispanics from living with dignity," said Trini Garcia, who came to Alabama on a tourist visa 15 years ago and stayed after it expired.

"I never thought Arizona’s law was going to come to Alabama," she said. "Now it’s created chaos among Hispanics in Alabama."

Garcia was one of several speakers Monday at a hearing called by congressional Democrats who traveled to Birmingham to rally opposition to HB 56, the state anti-immigration law patterned after Arizona’s SB 1070.

Even though parts of the Alabama law have been blocked by courts — including a temporary restraining order issued against one provision Wednesday by a federal district judge — Garcia continues to worry about the law, which took effect Sept. 29.

HB 56 has caused her family to hide in their Tuscaloosa home and only go out if necessary, she said. The family has cut off all extracurricular activities for her two American-born sons.

"Now I don’t go out and feel like a prisoner in my house," she said. "We just don’t want to stand out."

The family needs to renew the state-required registration on its mobile home, and the license plates on their cars are set to expire next year. If the law is still in place by then, they will not be able to drive, she said.

"If we can’t get to work, we’re going to have to leave," Garcia said.

That’s fine with supporters of the law.

As I understand it, the Alabama unemployment rate is seeing a dramatic drop.

Uh, huh. Like Voter ID laws cause “fear and anxiety” among those trying to vote illegally. Having illegals here costs the taxpayer big $$. You never hear the MSM whining about that.

So you're here illegally and you want us to 'overlook' this? Not going to happen.

I’ve been breaking the law for 15 years. I even raised my kids their entire lives having them know I’m breaking the law every day of their lives! This is unfair!

Cry me a river!

I read somehwere that in Oct, the first month of the new immigration law, Alabama’s unemployment rate came down by one-half percent and that legal Alabamians had filled the gaps.

This is the "chaos" the illegal Hispanics feel? Oh dear, I feel SO sorry for them. Gulags? Siberia? Torture? NO, their mobile home and vehicles will not be driven LEGALLY. Gee, they MIGHT have to deal with breaking the law. Oh no!!!!

"Now it’s created chaos among Hispanics in Alabama."

Only among those here illegally.

My wife is a Mexican National working at Sikorsky Aircraft (legally thank you), and she is not in chaos.

You would not believe the liberal stories they play on the local news every day. The illegals must not be too worried; there seems to be no shortage of them who will be allow themselves to be interviewed on TV to tell thier heartbreaking tales of the effects of the new law.

Criminals (people doing illegal things) usually have fear and anxiety when they think that they are about to be caught and punished.

Let’s check the Boston Herald’s record of reporting assault, rape, murder, robbery and countless other sickening crimes committed against American citizens by illegal aliens, not to mention the billions of dollars blatenly stolen from taxpayers through massive fraud.

To the criminal MSM and their enablers, illegals can only be victims.

The lives and rights of citizens are meaningless.

This would be funny if not real.

Seriesly, law-breakers are going to be made so uncomfortable by laws being enforced that they may - gasp - stop breaking the law?

just damn. can’t make this stuff up.
