Red Card Fantasy
NRO ^ | 112311 | Mark Krikorian

Mickey Kaus does “world-historical thinker” Gingrich the favor of taking his amnesty/guestworker proposal seriously, dismantling the illogic of it. But there’s one aspect he didn’t touch on. The “red card” thing has been promoted for years by heiress Helen Krieble, a charter member of the billionaires for open borders club, as a Saudi-style labor-importation system that wouldn’t lead to citizenship. But, at the same time, Krieble is strongly opposed to birthright citizenship, devoting a couple of pages in her amnesty/guestworker white paper to the subject. But what if these red-card-carrying “temporary” workers have kids? (It’s not like we’re going to bar women from participating, as was the case for the old Bracero Program that was ended in the early 1960s, and women make up close to half the illegal population.) Wouldn’t making them leave their U.S.-citizen kids when their contracts expire be “inhumane”? So doesn’t it follow that birthright citizenship has to be ended before the first red card is handed out? If not, why not? If so, then why didn’t Gingrich mention that precondition to his amnesty plan?

Only a complete moron (which Newt is not) would believe that a “red card non-citizenship” would hold up to a SCOTUS review.

So he's being totally ingenuous when he proposes this foolishness.

What does Newt really believe? Any damn thing he thinks he can sell the dumb masses that day.

Why's that?

Do I really have to explain it to you? Or do I need a /sarc tag to understand that you are kidding?

He prefaced his comments last night by saying that he’d probably take some “heat” over it...which he is. At least he’s done some thought on the subject, and let’s face it, we’re not electing a King.

He could have soft pedaled a generic answer and everybody would have been happy today. He did say that he’d enforce the laws.

Having a large (and ever growing) mostly segregated group of foreign laborers has worked so well for France.

He did say that he’d enforce the laws.

The law says you deport people who are here illegally. There is no proviso that if you have been here for 25 years, pay taxes, and have children and grandchildren, you can stay. It is also illegal for illegal aliens to work here. And most have committed ID theft, tax evasion, driving without a license, using phony SS numbers, etc. These are the people whose presence should be legalized?

We have over 4 million intending immigrants waiting overseas for their turn to enter this country. They have completed all the paperwork, including background checks and physicals. Some have been waiting for many years. Yet the lawbreakers who broke into this country are allowed to stay. Does the Rule of Law mean anything to Newt?
