Your "group" in Detroit is heavy on the Kurdish side. Around here most of the Moslems come from up the Indus toward Faiselabad ~ although we do have some folks from Bengla Desh.

They're mostly engineers or guys with doctorates ~ and they follow a practical sort of Halal avoiding pork (which your list does help them do).

Still, we've had the nearby Afghan community shoot some Iranians to death over what can only be described as religious differences.

As long as the crowd around Detroit continues to collect in like minded ethnocentric communities you will miss out on that sort of thing.

But here if you want to make sure your meat was slaughtered according to the most rigorous Halal standard you need to go visit the same farm the Orthodox Jews do where they are equipped to do slaughtering on site. Otherwise you get what you get.

>>Your "group" <<

It's not "my" group, nor is it in Detroit. However, the largest concentration of Muslims in the country is here and they use that website as a guide to Halal. All of them, because Halal standards are Sharia. Although each sect may take or disregard standards, that website uses the strongest.

And no, if you want your meat to the strictest Halal standard, Kosher won't cut it. Unless the Jew butchering is willing to pronounce "Bismillah al Raḥmān Al Raḥīm" over the meat.

I’ve never done any turkey hunting but for most of my life they weren’t common around here but now we’re overrun with them.

Funny, isn't it? Twenty years ago when I moved to FL I never saw any turkeys. Now they are almost like rats. :-) I turned into my sister's subdivision the other night and the first house I passed had at least 20 turkeys poking around in the yard.

. . . just questioning the logistics of lopping off the heads of thousands of turkeys facing Mecca.

How easy it would be to be off a few degrees and face them toward Jamestown instead! Actually, it would be interesting to see just how Butterball arrived at their preferred turkey orientation. Maybe we should plot the points between Butterball factory and Mecca . . . see what falls in between or close? Also get a floor plan for the factory. This is truly a subject for investigative reporting.

OK. I went to the Butterball website and there is no such article about the turkeys being halal or being slaughtered facing mecca. This looks like an urban legend email.

Nope, not an urban legend...
Wendy Howze, a Butterball Consumer Response Representative, responded: "Our whole turkeys are certified halal."

Halal certification includes fees that those being certified pay on a yearly basis

HALAL CERTIFICATION PROCEDURE

1. Please fill out the application form online or obtained through e-mail or fax.
2. Initial discussion on phone about the Halal requirements, plant inspection, explanation about the steps involve in Halal certification, discussion about your products, marketing area, raw material, processing aid ingredients, your HACCP (Hazard Analysis Critical Control Points) program, Recall procedure, packaging materials, warehouse and sanitation materials including the Master Sanitation schedule and POG (Process Operating Guidelines) for Halal certified food products.
3. If your products pass the Halal requirements then a contract is signed including number of inspection per year, record keeping, and number of products to be Halal certified and service fees for Halal certification.

Zabiha Halal meat is meat slaughtered by slitting the throat of the animal. In this context, however, it is used to mean meat slaughtered by a Muslim using the properly prescribed method as is indicated in the Sunnat-an-Nabi

Halal Certification of Gold Kist chicken processor that certifies that the bird is killed by slitting the throat and then blessed.

That is one huge turkey. Meat eaters should kill their own meat at least once in a while so they know what is involved. I have killed ducks and chickens for eating

Never imagined that happening ~ I was referring to a farm where folks go who want to BUTCHER THEIR OWN ~ you know, the old fashioned way.

I believe this applies to specific foreign market turkeys and not all domestic ones:

Thats what I was thinking. Especially if there is a fee involved, then all their turkeys would not be halal, just the ones necessary for the target market.

“That is one huge turkey.”

My muscles are telling me all about it this morning.

“Meat eaters should kill their own meat at least once in a while so they know what is involved. I have killed ducks and chickens for eating”

I have turkeys for the holidays, chickens mainly for eggs and a couple of steers in the pasture. Getting rabbits in the spring and a milk cow or two in the summer. I want pigs but the wife is putting her foot down on that one.

We also have grouse and wild pigeon that show up here between late August and early October....(yummy)

“To be halal certified the animal must be facing Mecca, have its throat cut while still alive and then ritually sacrificed by a Muslim who recites a prayer dedicating the slaughter to Allah. Fees must be paid to one of the certifying organisations for this service. Islamic certifying organisations benefit financially from providing this service. They receive a constant stream of funds to support Islamic projects which contribute to the advancement of sharia (Islamic law) here and around the world.” source – Halal Choices

What does this have to do with supporting terrorism? First of all, they have to say a prayer while slaughtering the animals. Secondly, Butterball has to pay them to do this “service” and the money they pay them goes to terrorists. Oh, and they don’t have the right to sell meat sacrificed to idols (false gods) to unsuspecting consumers.

Not if you go to gas stations that sell gas from America, such as Valero.
