I don't think it's inappropriate for the SCV to put small flags on the rebs' graves, but I think it's an insult to the memory of all the Carter County men who fought for the Union to put such a large reb flag like it was Confederate territory. A lot of local men fought and suffered to rid Carter County of the Confederate invaders,

What’s stopping union sympathizers from placing a flag of their choice in the cemetery?

It's funny though you are maybe historically accurate that Carter county was majority Unionist...at least that is the conventional wisdom today. The political leadership[of that corner of east TN in the war was Unionist...no question of that.

Today CSA sentiment runs very high in Appalachian TN...Southern flags everywhere...you are likely to see more CSA flags there than anywhere I have been except on the car tags of my home state.

I owned property one county to the east in Ashe county North Carolina for many years and know the area well.

It is very socially conservative, extremely white and hence sympathetic to Southerness.

I'll be you the problem is actually this Watauga Historical Outfit opposing them. I'll wage they have more than a few academic types on their board many of whom are likely not from the South.

I know it pains you but south of Northern Virginia, the mountainous South is truly very very southern and embraces all the old vestiges symbolically anyhow and identifies with that...not so much with the Unionism you accurately described from history..

North Carolina is the same way except Asheville which is highly lesbian and leftist and the resort areas like Banner Elk-Beech-Sugar-Blowing Rock which in summer become very Florida oy vey.

The resort areas to the sw of Appalachia like Cashiers, Highlands, Blue Ridge etc stay southern as a rule even in summer.

Your admonishments are only self serving btw. The Yankees who fought in that was and sacrificed and watched their pals die by the 100s of 100os invading my homeland had no problem coming south after the war for the remainder of their lives and commemorating the valor year and after year with each other's flags in all their glory and uniforms and whatnot. Commanders of each side traveled long distances to honour each other in death. Yet you and your tribe here consider southern symbolism an insult. It was not an insult to the actual northeners who fought in that war and I'll tell you what. I'll go with their judgment over your's.
