ORLANDO, Fla. A retired prosecutor from the Casey Anthony murder trial calls her lead attorney "smarmy" in a new book. He writes that even though the Florida mother acquitted of killing her 2-year-old daughter "may have deserved" the death penalty if convicted, he didn't think a jury would ever agree to the punishment.
Jeff Ashton writes in Tuesday's "Imperfect Justice: Prosecuting Casey Anthony," that he would have been happier if the prosecution team left the death penalty off the table. He also confirmed that toward the end of the trial, Anthony's attorneys tried to persuade the 25-year-old to accept a plea deal but she refused to listen.

Good article. Jose Baez IS sleezy.
“Good article. Jose Baez IS sleezy.” Soon to be the next RAT congressman from FLA
“Smarmy” is the best he can come up with?
By the way, why did he pursue the death penalty then? The answer is, because he thought it would land him a more conservative jury. Turns out that it only resulted in an overly-skeptical jury.
Had there been no Murder 1, and no death penalty, she would probably have been convicted.
For all Baez’s faults, Ashton displayed a monster ego in court, and the jury actually ended up liking Baez better.
Well, it takes a smart, sleazy lawyer to represent a guilty murderer and get her off. That’s a given. Few decent lawyers would want to take such a client.
I’d fault the prosecutor for failing to do his job.
And also the police, since as the story notes, they never bothered to search the swamp near the child’s house, where her body was accidentally found by a meter reader, too late to do a proper forensic exam.
Was reading this artical and thinking about Free Republic and how it has contributed to sanity in this nation. consider the TVs that are still functional not having been shot, the walls without holes punched in them, the many small children who have not yet learned profanities. This is all due to Jim and Free Republic lending us a megaphone to shout our frustrations at the world. So get off your wallets people, put your money where your mouth is and help us pay for that megaphone. our sanity depends on this.

“In new book, he claims defense encouraged her not to cooperate with investigators”
And that is exactly what any good defense attorney would advise their client.
Mr. Baez did his job, the prosecution failed to do their job.
And if you are ever accused of a crime, you would want someone like Mr. Baez at your side.
Sore loser. Or just, loser.
I always like Joan Baez
Baez is a sickening excuse for a person.
His behavior during the whole trial was as sleazy as it gets.
“His behavior during the whole trial was as sleazy as it gets.”
His client was found to be not guilty.
He did his job and did a much better job than the prosecution.
