The nerve of this fatass
Arugula has been around a long time, and is really good (if you like its peppery bite). Don't let the Obamas keep you from trying it.
But aren’t organic veggies considered a bio-harzard? At least they are considered as such in Souther Nevada, just ask the folk at Quail Hollow Farms in Overton, NV...
How can I put this? Ummmmm.....Mochelle's statement is "lacking facts and is untrue."
Is that a nice enough way of saying it?
First of all, the "under-served" communities she is talking about are inner city hell holes where grocery stores and supermarket chains have tried to operate, but they are robbed blind by both their customers and their employees.
Second of all, proper diet and eating habits are part of personal responsibility; it is not a question of availability. I could go to any supermarket right now for the cost of a Burger King meal and purchase enough rice, vegetables, and chicken to feed at least 3 children a good meal.
These obese inner city children have obese "mothers (and I used the term loosely), no fathers around, and zero responsibility. Oh, they will "swipe swipe" that "free" EBT card at the Taco Bell all day long, and then purchase a 2 liter bottle of Mountain Dew. You bet! Hell, they are not paying for it.
I grew up at least 10 miles away from the nearest grocery store. And I’m not obese.
Never ate arugula until recently. I grow it in my back yard, in the city.
Realisticly tho’, growing food in your own garden is more expensive and way more work than buying in a grocery store.
(Just dug up some sweet potatoes which, although smaller, taste way better than what we bought in a store.)
I am sorry, but that statement is not entirely correct. Fast food outlets in several states already accept EBT cards for payment (Florida, California, Michigan, and Arizona). Kentucky is about to be added to the list. While it is true that federal rules are supposed to prevent Food Stamps (now called SNAP cards) from being used for prepared foods, a 1970's provision that allows them to be used for anyone claiming disability, homelessness, or being elderly allows a truck to be driven through that loophole.
Fast Food Chains Getting Into the Food Stamp Act
There are lobbying efforts to expand the use of the EBT cards to all restaurants (not just fast food).
Restaurants want a piece of food stamp pie
"There is big money at stake. USDA records show food stamp benefits swelled from $28.5 billion to $64.7billion in that period. Four states accept restaurants, with Florida the most recent to begin a program. "It makes perfect sense to expand a program that's working well in California, Arizona and Michigan, enabling the homeless, elderly and disabled to purchase prepared meals with SNAP benefits in a restaurant environment," Yum! spokesman Jonathan Blum said."

Heres a quick list of fast food restaurants in states that already accept food stamps for restaurant meals: Michigan: Churchs Chicken Kentucky Fried Chicken McDonalds Subway Grandmas Famous Chicken Eight Mile Pancake House Mr. Ts BBQ Vitos Pizza California: Jack in the Box Subway El Pollo Loco Papa Murphys Pizza Florida KFC Taco Bell Pizza Hut Papa Murphys Pizza Arizona Dominos Pizza Golden Corral Southern Cuisine Rallys Hamburger
Could it be because criminals and gangs in those areas have in effect closed the 'grocery stores' with their thuggery. Michelle would really do the small business owners in high crime areas a favor by bringing back the draft....making these shiftless gang oriented adolescents do something useful and less jungle oriented. A great job for some of our returning soldiers?
Arugula had or has the same snob appeal that coffeehouse caffè latte has.....
Ahhh that explains it, I don’t do coffee houses either. Make mine at home. ;)
Then perhaps it was a discussion I heard on the news about whether to allow this in Illinois. It’s currently not allowed here. I’d like for the use to be restricted only to food items that must be prepared in order to be eaten. For example, whole fryer chicken, but not pre-cooked breaded fried chicken for microwave heating. Ingredients from which pizza could be made, but not frozen pizzas. No gum or candy or soft-drinks. No water unless the local water has been deemed unfit for human consumption.
Or their use restricted only to government surplus, bulk foods with the instruction that these foods will enable you and your family to eat a healthy, balanced diet, but that if you want a huge variety of popular name-brand foods, you’ll have to pay for it yourself.
