Israel can live with Iranian nuclear bomb

Israel can live with an Iranian nuclear bomb, head of the Israeli Space Agency Professor Yitzhak Ben Yisrael said on Wednesday in an interview with Globes.

Speaking a day after the release of an IAEA report detailing Iran's efforts at weapons development, Ben Yisrael explained, "One nuclear bomb won't destroy a state, not even a neighborhood in Tel Aviv. An atomic bomb like the one the Iranians want to build has a radius of 500 meters of death and destruction, and 1,000 meters of lighter damage."

Looks like they have libs in their space agency too. Iran actually wants to use their weapons offensively, and they don’t care about what kind of damage they will end up causing.

The problem with that is, then Israel would have to live with a Saudi bomb too. Beyond the troubling issues with Iran having a nuke is the fact that the Sunni’s will never allow the Shiites to have the only atomic weapons in the middle east. If Iran gets one, it will spark an atomic arms race which will eventually lead to many of Israel’s neighbors being nuclear armed. That is the real reason Israel may conclude they simply can not allow Iran to build a bomb.

Tell Ben Yisrael he, his family, friends, and anyone else he's close or cares about can live in the 500M zone. Wonder if his outlook will change.

Israel can live with Iran bomb, only if Iran does not live.

Maybe, but the question still stands, could Israel afford to have a series of land battles, naval battles in the straights and canals, including the Strait of Hormuz, thereby bringing multiple other nations into battle, and Air Force battles over concerns Iran might possibly have and try to use nukes of that power ? It would be good if it was feasible, but in these times, I have to doubt it. Particularly now that Israel’s sole reliable ally is becoming, well, less reliable.

Fair enough, but first it has to be clearly established that Iran has nuclear weapons it could conceivable use in war-that could take up to 5 or even 10 years. Then the Arab states would have to make a decision to start building the nuclear technology and then they would have to start from the ground up in most cases. If it takes the Iranian regime this long to build nukes of that strength, imagine the time it would take the Saudis to build up nuclear weaponry to the point where they are a threat. Remember, we’re talking Saudis, perhaps the most unproductive people on earth.

Just another self-hating Jew who wants to see Israel destroyed.

Yes the problem isn’t one bomb. The problem is 5 bombs in two years, then 10 in 3 years, then 20 in 5 years, then 30 in 7 years, then 100...

Looking at history since 1947, I would never underestimate Israel or count them out...under any circumstances.

I wouldnt generally either, but there are still limits. And starting the Irani-Israel war over the possibility of using nukes, with the strength outlined in the Jerusalem Post paper, are still transgressing the limits. Even if we would love it see it happen. I suspect that Israel can do it only if they obtain irrefutable proof that Iran intends to launch those nukes at Israel cities and is getting ready to do it.

Perhaps, but they're also very wealthy (at least the royal families). They'd just buy it from someplace like Pakistan.

When they hit Osirak in the 80s and the Syrian facility a couple years ago, they weren't waiting around for the nukes to be deployable. They also didn't care what anyone else thought about it.

Maybe, but then they are so unproductive that they would be able to recreate the technology or use it properly on their own they way they would need to anyway. I mean, we really are talking mega unproductive douchebags here. And what would they do with the nukes ? Even with the nukes they probably would still feel the need to have Israel back them up against a Shia nuclear Iran. The Saudis have already stated their willingness to have Israel take the initiative: http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/2285767/posts

With the Saudis, also remember you are talking about people with no spine whatsoever, unless you’re talking about their ability to ruthlessly supress defenseless women and Shias and political opponents in their own country.

That was true, but to say it as simple as possible, that was then, this is now. I wish they could do just what they did then, but I am not sure about it. They could conceivably get away with exact, precise strikes aimed solely at the facilities-which would have to be done perfectly. But they are walking on landmines here.

The thing I've learned about Israeli military ops is this: Whatever/whenever/however you think they're going to do something, you'll be wrong.

If/when they pull an operation against Iran, we'll all be slack-jawed, wondering how the hell they did that.

I have thought about this a lot.

Pretty much every conventional means that could be brought to bear to destroy Iran’s nuclear program would require total commitment of US forces.

If Israel must go it alone then there is only one way to do it. It’s not conventional and it would not take a large force to accomplish. Israel would be able to keep their air assets over Israel and would not have to have them over Iran.

Israel has all it needs, Sub launched cruise missiles, battlefield neutron weaponry, a capable commando force, a reason to act and most importantly...the will.

The Jews will not go quietly to the oven again!
