Arrests of illegal immigrants down 43% on Arizona border

NOGALES, Ariz. — The number of illegal immigrants arrested by the Border Patrol in the Tucson Sector fell by more than 40 percent last year, a significant drop that indicates illegal immigration has slowed considerably in Arizona.

Official statistics won’t be released for several weeks, but Alan Bersin, the commissioner of Customs and Border Protection, told Border Patrol agents in Nogales this week that arrests in the Tucson Sector fell to 123,000 last fiscal year. Arrests in the Nogales station, the largest in the Tucson Sector, fell by 43 percent to 18,000.

“Ladies and gentlemen, know that you are engaged in a historic enterprise here,” Bersin told the agents. The drop in arrests, he said, shows that illegal immigrants “are not coming through here anymore, and when they do, they are getting apprehended.”

Bersin, who toured the border near Nogales on horseback Sunday with Department of Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano and members of the agency’s horse patrol, reiterated the numbers in an interview with The Arizona Republic.

“This is the year we close the lid on this sector,” Bersin told The Republic.

Last year’s 123,000 arrests is the lowest level in the Tucson Sector since 1993, a remarkable turnaround for a region that, Bersin said, “was out of control” just a few years ago.

I don’t see how a decrease in arrests would indicate that fewer illegals are coming into our country. Holder and his morons had their courts prohibit Arizona law enforcement from arresting the illegal aliens pouring into Arizona.

Isn’t it the Arizona law that scared them off?

Probably because anyone who wanted to come here already has.

Or they are lying about it. Muslims do that, you know.

Wrong metric to draw those conclusions. After all, if the number of border incursions is dropping, one could argue that the arrest rate should go UP. Also, memo to Perry, the administration is touting ACTIVE measures like National Guard and installing fencing.

Look, let me explain it for the umpteenth time. Clinton decimated the border patrol. 9/11 happened and the decimated border patrol was spread even thinner when so many of them were now put on the northern border. Illegals entered the country with impunity.

The Bush administration trained and hired thousands of border patrol and when they put the National Guard on the border illegal immigration trickled to nothing compared to what it had been and it has never picked up again. I know this by my own eye witness, I know it by tracks and water bottles and backpacks and disposable cell phones in the desert everywhere you looked to none or very few of them now.

Why Arizona and Alabama’s laws are so important is the millions who came in before we were able to adequetely guard the borders again. The same ones that the ruling class would like to pander to and make citizens.

If the stats are correct, which is doubtful, that means that 57% of illegal aliens are still getting into our country. Now that is a lousy stat.

It could just be that the gross flow rate is reduced because there aren’t many being thrown back to try again. The net could be the same because now it only takes one successful crossing to stick.

2 reasons. 1- They are already almost all here. 2- We just arrest them anymore.

The US/Mexican border is wide open and everyone in positions of power in the Federal government knows it and supports it. There is no more effective means of destroying this country than to wantonly import poor, illiterate, communist inclined, law breakers in staggering numbers.

Why would they want to destroy this country? Well, they believe that they can rebuild it in short order in their image. There is a nightmare ahead of us.

Ah, yes. George W. Bush, the most pro-illegal alien President in American history rides in to save America from the crush of illegal aliens.

Is that really the line you're peddling?

If you actually examine their actual records, you'd see that Clinton record of border and interior enforcement was much better than Bush's. (See: Bush Claims He's Boosted Immigration Law Enforcement. He Hasn't, Of Course.)

What you're ignoring that Bush championed, and chaperoned many pro-illegal alien programs and he ordered border and interior enforcement slashed. (See: Bush official slammed for stopping illegals sweeps)

Worksite arrests of illegal aliens fell some 97 percent, from 2,859 in 1999 to 159 in 2004. Investigations targeting employers of illegal immigrants fell more than 70 percent, from 7,637 in 1997 to 2,194 in 2003. Arrests on job sites fell—precipitously, from 17,554 in 1997 to 445 in 2003. Fines levied for immigration-law violations fell from 778 in 1997 to 124 in 2003. Notices of intent to fine employers fell from 865 in 1997 to just 3 in 2004. (See: Employer Sanctions Collapse Even Further in 2004

So, I'd like to see your sources that show that Clinton cut immigration enforcement and Bush increased it.
