You’ve put your finger on one of the main advantages of a floating currency. Had Greece retained the drachma, it would have slowly depreciated, over the years. Each depreciation would have made Greece’s main export (suntans) cheaper, and thus in greater demand. The depreciated currency would also have kept Greeks at home, and curtailed other spending on foreign goods and services. I know of which I speak — that’s what happened in Canada, when our dollar depreciated to 62% of the value of the U.S. dollar.
