Would a Cain implosion benefit Gingrich?
CBS News ^ | Naureen Khan

Don't tell Newt Gingrich, but he's not running against a general election campaign against President Obama just yet.

The former speaker of the House campaigns for president with the air of someone with a real shot at the Republican nomination, steadfastly declining to take shots at his GOP rivals on the stump, lobbing criticism at the White House and describing for audiences what his first presidential press conference would be like.

Until recently, it all would have been written off in political circles as the work of the overly active imagination of a famously self-confident politician. But lately, Gingrich has reason to have a little more swagger in his step. His campaign, once stuck at the back of the pack, is experiencing a revival thanks to some sharp debate performances, an uptick in his once anemic fundraising, and the inability of candidates to go the distance.

With businessman Herman Cain's juggernaut stopped cold by an unfolding sexual harassment scandal, Gingrich is getting a second look from social conservatives and tea party supporters who long to get behind anyone but former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, the top-tier candidate who continues to disappoint them on the ideological purity test.

The former speaker, who led Republicans to congressional victories in the mid-1990s, is also benefitting from a dwindling GOP field as top-choice alternatives to Romney self-destruct: First, tea party darling Michele Bachmann of Minnesota, then deep-pocketed Texas Gov. Rick Perry and finally it seems, the charismatic Cain.

The latest CBS/New York Times, in late October, has Gingrich breaking into double digits nationally and at third place with a respectable 10 percent of the vote, a far cry from his situation in mid-summer, when his cash-strapped campaign nearly collapsed with the mass exodus of several senior aides. Also,

Newt is the only Republican standing up for Cain. There is a very intriguing partnership between these guys.

Gingrich and Perry are the only ones that have something to gain by taking Cain out of the game.

Newt has softened Cain up ito the point of agreeing to a one-on-one unmoderated debate that Perry & Romney refused. Bad idea Herman. Here's hoping the "partnership" culminates with Cain as the VP candidate!

I think it does. I’m proof of it.

I wasn’t firmly on any Cain bandwagon yet, but was putting him in the number one “like” spot the past couple weeks as his candidacy started to seem like it could really work.

Now after the past five days, I think Cain is going to have to do a lot to bring me back. Obviously the “gotcha” business by the national media is unfair and I don’t like it. That said, my guess is Cain probably was running around with his zipper undone based on the amount of smoke coming from different directions.

But more importantly than the issue of whether you believe the accusations or not, Cain doesn’t have a campaign and he doesn’t appear to be able to manage the pressure. The responses to all this have been a PR nightmare.

So, it comes back to Newt as the last man left standing to act as counterweight to Romney. Newt has done one heck of a job the past two-months looking downright....well....Presidential.

I’d like to see more from Newt and might be able to support him.

Cain isn’t going to implode and it’s looking like a Cain/Gingrich ticket. IMO

Newt is in the same position McCain was in back in late 2007. Third is not a bad place to be at this point of the game.

First place is not that great. The target on your back never goes away.

Or would a Cain implosion make Governor Palin rethink her position?

“Gingrich and Perry are the only ones that have something to gain by taking Cain out of the game.”

I don’t agree. Although Newt would inherit most of the Cain vote, Mitt would have an easier target. Perry would not get it. Mitt would rather face Newt than Cain, simple as that...

I ain’t voting for anyone other than Cain. Screw them all.

I’ll either cast my vote for a decent, honest man, or I’ll watch America die.

Color me utterly disgusted.

“Cain doesn’t have a campaign”.

Think again, Steve.

Patriots,

This morning I announced my newly formed Iowa Fund. I am incredibly excited to announce that the Iowa Fund has already topped the $100,000 mark!

Visit www.IowaFund.com today and help me reach my goal of $999,000!

My opponents, the liberal media, and President Obama are intimidated by my “9-9-9 Plan” and commonsense solutions. They have launched vicious public attacks on me and my campaign.

Please show your support by donating today!

Thank you and God bless.

Herman Cain

“With businessman Herman Cain’s juggernaut stopped cold by an unfolding sexual harassment scandal...”

Really? And what evidence of this campaign being stopped cold is being offered? A decrease in campaing contributions, a drop in poll numbers?

Hmmm. Or is it just a bunch of bullmitt and wishful thinking on the “reporters” part?

While the others have gone after one another, Newt has gone after Obama’s policies, that’s what I want to see. I’m getting fed up with all the internal squabbling.

There will not be a Cain implosion, unless there is video of him grabbing someone’s boobs and yelling “It’s party time, baby!”. Anything short of that, and I could not give a damn.

This nomination will come down to Romney Vs. "not Romney." Right now Cain is enjoying the boost that comes from being the "not Romney" candidate who is currently perceived as having the best chance at the nomination, the same as Bachmann and Perry before him. Gingrich has been written off since the beginning, but his numbers are now rising even faster than Cain's. And Cain has just made the mistake of agreeing to a one-on-one debate with Gingrich. Perhaps you see an upside there for Cain. I sure don't.

In any case, Gingrich has zero value as a VP candidate. So its all or nothing as far as he's concerned.
