Putting Herman Cain's Sexual Harassment Accusations In Context
Forbes ^ | November 1, 2011 | Bill Frezza

A media storm has broken out over allegations made by the inside-the-Beltway publication Politico that two women in the employ of the National Restaurant Association were made to feel angry or uncomfortable by sexually suggestive remarks or gestures made by Herman Cain when he headed that association a dozen years ago.

I have no idea whether Herman Cain ever made two of his employees feel uncomfortable, nor do any of the rest of us. I also can’t predict whether voters will conclude that such insensitive behavior, if substantiated, renders Cain unfit to be president, particularly given the comportment of other celebrated Oval Office occupants. But I do know what it is like terminating employees in the over-regulated and hyper-litigious environment created by the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission and the tort bar that works so diligently to expand the scope of employment law. I am also very familiar with the steps companies often take to avoid the expense of fighting false accusations.

Does anyone remember the story last year in the New York Observer about retired ABC News producer Mimi Gurbst? Where was the MSM when this office story broke?

At the time of publishing, the author thought he was writing a puff piece on Gurbst leaving ABC News, but he unintentionally opened a floodgate of old wounds from longtime ABC journalists. The comments section had over 250 comments from former and current employees complaining about how Gurbst ruined the careers of people who didn't play her office games. They wrote about how Gurbst would always probe into people's sexual habits, and speculate and spread rumors about those who didn't associate with her.

She was fond of asking others to guess who was gay and who wasn't.

Gurbst would give her favorites the prime assignments, while she called her enemies on weekends and in the middle of the night to report on minor stories.

Throughout all of this, people commented on how ABC News allowed this egregious sexual harassment to continue in their headquarters.

The bottom line is simple: journalists are quick to use report on allegations of others, but they turned a blind eye when it was going on in their own offices.

Let’s not forget though; Cain told the woman she was the same height as his wife. If that isn’t sexual harrassment I don’t know what is. If he pulled down his pants, whipped it out and told her to kiss it like Bill Clinton did to Paula Jones, that would be OK. But to tell a woman she is the same height as your wife? Wooooooooooo!

The worst thing that can be said about Herman is that he is an apparent heterosexual.

An excellent analysis. I hope these points get into the larger discussion.

“...the ink that will be spilled over Hermangate will surely distract us from the serious issues of one of the most important presidential campaigns of our generation.

But then, that’s the whole purpose of the story, isn’t it?”

It’s Politico’s purpose and hopefully its death. I remember when they started and WTOP radio was always advertising them as some sort of authority on political matters. I always wondered who the hell they were.

I was a Cain supporter before this story broke; I'm still a Cain supporter. But I'm waiting to see where this story goes.

What you've said about "Cain [telling] the woman she was the same height as his wife" is possibly, but not probably, the full story, in my opinion. I'd be careful about stating it as "the facts" if only because it's more damaging if and when more facts come out after the conservative story has been to draw a box and say "all of the facts are right here in this box."

This story has been fluid so far.

I’m looking for an e-mail address or a phone number so I can complain to Politico about their racist behavior. It has to be racist, why else would they print such a poorly sourced story and then continue to fill their “front page” with non-articles on the subject today?

To help Herman send him something http://www.hermancain.com/
but also “like” him at facebook.com.
Facebook likes are a new way to count “buzz.” Starting from way back, Herman has increased his “likes” by 8% in just the last week. Mitts has a huge lead in “likes” but he has been running for a long time.

I always wondered who the hell they were.

As I understand it, a wholly owned subsidiary of the Washington Post. And you now how fair and balanced they are.

Since the leftist, marxist, socialist RAT bastards (most likely demoRATs & 0dumb0 surrogates) are behind this non-story IMO, I would say that that if this is the best they can do, knowing all the while all the lurid accounts of Ted Kennedy, Bill Clinton, John Edwards, and yes, even 0dumb0 himself, then they have taken their best shot to smear Cain and in the end, it is actually strengthening Cain’s support. I imagine the libTurds were desperately hoping that Cain would turn tail and run away, which isn’t going to happen.
