NYPD Union Chief: We'll Sue Protesters Who Hurt Sergeants
New York City Sergeants Benevolent Association president says protesters who hurt sergeants will be taken to court
Friday, Oct 28, 2011 | Updated 8:17 AM EDT

The head of the union representing New York City police sergeants wants Occupy Wall Street protesters to know that he'll pursue legal action against anyone who harms police.

In a New York Post op-ed, Ed Mullins, president of the New York City Sergeants Benevolent Association, writes that he respects the ideas of free speech and assembly that have empowered the Wall Street movement. But cops should not be injured trying to keep the peace.

"What has gone mostly unreported is the number of uniformed NYPD members who have been injured while trying to maintain order at these demonstrations," Mullins wrote. "To date, at least 20 officers have been hurt during flare-ups with protesters whose actions are becoming increasingly hostile and aggressive."

Well, for once, a union might come in handy. These demonstrators seem to feel that hurting a cop is a freebie, and maybe (since the City of New York would never dream of pressing charges against the poor dears) this is a way of putting some pressure on their reckless, destructive behavior.

I wish we could hear from some experienced cops and prosecutors on this issue.

It’s always the same old story, ritual mass arrests, and then the miscreants get off.

What about targeted arrests against the most obvious instigators and egregious offenders? A la Israel and Hamas, picking out and arresting the real troublemakers and making them do real hard time would take the edge off things.

You'll sue?!!! Why not also consider a strongly worded letter?

Arrest the SOBs and use lots of tasers to get through the crowds. In the words of Chris Rock, "Stop breaking the law!"

Can you imagine the outrage if the Police Departments and Mayors were reacting this way if it was a bunch of skinheads or KKK that were "protesting" in this fashion?

Justice is blind my @$$!

New York City police sergeants have a different union from that of other police officers?

Hey, baby, it's the Democrat Media. Do you really think they give a rat's ass about police?

"NYPD Union Chief: We'll Sue Protesters Who Hurt Sergeants"

And then, according to Jim Malone (Sean Connery) in the "Untouchables", there's the "Chicago way": "They pull a knife, you pull a gun. He sends one of yours to the hospital, you send one of his to the morgue."

While I kinda like the idea of these idiots facing repercussions, I don’t really like the idea of cops suing criminals.

I once asked my Highway Patrol nephew-in-law if he ever had to wrestle a 300-pound drunk to the ground at 3:00 a.m. He laughed and said, “Yes, and when I do, I know how to put those handcuffs on his wrists so that he cries all the way to the jail — while I take the long route there.”

Smelly, dope smoking, long haired hippy freaks and union agitators, trust fund babies put cops in the hospital throwing rocks and (what is usually not reported by the media from experience from the same type of "student" protestors during the 60's) feces, and bags of urine at cops that try to keep you from becoming a rioters mob...Saw it all in the sixty's and such protests are not sweet little groups of law abiding citizens making their sad little condition known.

Your pathetic post shows your not too smart. Take the cops away and you and your ilk will destroy the homes and business's in the area..I wonder if your home is filled with feces, urine smelling furniture and floors.

The papers never tell you the truth about what really is going on...They didn't during the 60's democrat convention either...My best friends brother was a cop in Chicago during those years. Nails were hammered into tennis balls and thrown at cops, bags of urine, bags of feces, spitting on the cops, agitating the stupid to do the same. But at that time according to the media, none of this was reported. Finally Mayor Daley gave the order to break up the mob and it was the cops that were the bad guys according to the TV and papers of the day.

Those trying to keep the riot from spreading were called "cops rioting on the poor innocent protestors)

Pathetic losers, trust fund babies, union thugs, communists, and all manner of wing nuts should be dragged out and put in jail and have the parks fumigated and usable to other people...if a few heads get cracked in the process, good.

But Bloomy hasn't got the balls to do it...he is a putz..

Yes. The PBA is the Patrolmen's Benevolent Association. The SBA is the Sergeants Benevolent Association. Then there's the Lieutenants Benevolent Association (LBA) and the Captains Endowment Association (CEA) for members in the rank of Captain, Deputy Inspector, Inspector, Deputy Chief, and Surgeon, who work in the New York City Police Department.

granny....some of my family are cops. Not the cops of the 60s. Pathetic because they threaten to sue! And only sergeants? Pathetic sissies!

Who is keeping the cops on a leash not allowing them to do the job they're paid to do?

Other ciries are taking action, but not New York's politically correct PD!

My father was a cop, Mounted division, Detroit, retired in 1950. He was involved in many of the union riots when Ford was being unionized...When people are killing and maiming others, heads need to be whacked. The cops do what has to be done during such times...it was not enjoyed, it was necessary...I remember my mother going next door about every hour as they had a short wave radio and dad wasn't home for days and the short wave radio was telling the people what was going on in Highland park and down town Detroit..She didn't know if he was alive or dead during those days of riots...

If a cop is killed or maimed by thugs, the thug should be sued. Don't do the crime if you can't do the time...hits the thugs in their pocketbooks..that can cause cooler heads to reign...jmho
