Last year, just over 4 million boys and girls were born in the 50 states.
4,316,233.
That's how many babies were born in the United States in 2007, the highest number ever.
But after that, the number dropped. Last year, just over 4 million boys and girls were born in the 50 states.
The likely reason? The economy, of course.
A decline in fertility rates that began in 2008 is closely linked to financial woes that started at the same time, said a new Pew Research Center report issued Wednesday. Changes in personal income, per capita GDP, unemployment rates and claims, and state-level foreclosure rates all had an effect.

This is news? That’s like saying that the sun rises in the East is news. It’s what ALWAYS has happened.......just look at the birth rates during the Great Depression!
Illegal aliens.......doubtful.
Welfare recipients? Doubtful. That’s there gold mine.
First thought I had, as well.
But white women? Of course!
Sorry, maybe some folks are doing that. I view most of CNN’s output with some suspicion. Among my bros and I, I have five, but two only have two apiece, and the last has three. Medical reasons for those with but the two. One of those higher-ups at my primary employer has nine. But then, like me, he’s Catholic. I know CNN wouldn’t say it like this, but perhaps it might have been better said as, “In A Tough Economy, With Obamacare, Americans Are Less Inclined To Try To Have More Children.” But they wouldn’t, would they?
I’ve been trying but I haven’t had one yet...wait, I’m a guy - duh.
Bucking the trend here... my 4th child Lily was born 3:50 AM this past Saturday. :-)
You obviously are optimistic about the social and economic prospects for the United States.
This runs counter to what I’ve been observing. Lots of my daughters friends have had babies in the last few years. Ages in late twenties / early thirties. And both of my daughters are pregnant. Told them I would welcome as many grandchildren as they wish to have. We’re all conservatives. So maybe it’s libs who are having declining birthrates (good).
Congrats!
