An Occupy Springfield demonstration, off to a slow start Monday morning in Court Square, grew to over 40 by early afternoon. By evening, that figure had climbed to about 150.
Demonstrators, chanting We are 99 percent, you are 99 percent, gathered on the sidewalk along Main Street Monday morning. Cheers sporadically erupted from the gathering crowd as honks of support came from passing motorists.
One of the demonstrators, Springfield resident Eugene Colemen, said he is having a hard time surviving in this economy. We are just trying to keep afloat, he said. We are just talking about food, shelter and clothing.
The wording on signs carried by the demonstrators included Eat the Rich, Housing Now! and 46 million in poverty.
For much of the morning, police easily outnumbered the 6 or 7 demonstrators on scene. Police gathered in small groups across Main Street, along Court Street - which has been shut-down for the day - and in front of the Bank of America branch about two blocks away.

Springfield, AR?
This must be Springfield, Mass.
Thanks
Unfortunately it is MA. My home town. But with all of the bullets flying around they won’t be there long. And the other good news is if they are there on a night without a hockey game, they won’t bother anyone...that town is a ghost town now. Hardly anyone goes there after work. Unless you are going to a strip club—and they won’t got there because they charge a cover and you need dollar bills.
When people are godless and expect that all their blessings come from the hand of man rather than a benevolent Creator this is what we get. A mini French Revolution circa 1789-99. The OWS crowd mimics this whereas the TEA PArty is sort of more in line with the American Revolution. Interesting that we have both elements in this nation currently.
My husband’s uncle was Postmaster of Springfield AR years ago and said, at the time, that there were something like 13 Springfields in the USA.
