Exclusive: Memo to Fox Business staff - don't copy Fox News

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Here's a novel idea: Fox Business Network should focus on covering business news.

At least that's what Kevin Magee, executive vice president of the News Corp-owned cable news network, is urging his staff to do.

Unhappy with Fox Business' focus on politics, Magee fired off a memo to employees reminding them that the network was not created to be a light version of its sister Fox News Channel.

"I've been asked to remind you all again that they are separate channels and the more we make FBN look like FNC the more of a disservice we do to ourselves," Magee said in the memo dated October 5, carrying the subject line "Fox News and Fox Business."

"I understand the temptation to imitate our sibling network in hopes of imitating its success, but we cannot," Magee went on to say in the memo. "If we give the audience a choice between FNC and the almost-FNC, they will choose FNC every time. Earnings, taxes, jobs etc give us PLENTY to chew on."

Fox Business, which was launched in October 2007 with $100 million in initial capital, sought to take Wall Street to Main Street by covering business stories for ordinary people -- seeing a market as CNBC and Bloomberg Television cater primarily to financial professionals.

But four years on, Fox Business Network's ratings remain far behind those of CNBC -- a disappointing performance in comparison with Fox News, which in four years rose to top then-market leader CNN and has reigned ever since.

In an interview with Reuters on Monday, Magee confirmed sending the memo and said that heading into the U.S. presidential election next year it was worth restating the importance of Fox Business finding its own voice and audience.

FBN could be a HUGE success if they stuck to business news about how the government is killing businesses

There is enough of that to report on it on a daily basis.

Maybe the problem isn't that political news is creeping into business news outlets.

Maybe the problem is that depressing business news so often makes the headlines on regular news channels.

My local Cablevision carrier dragged its heels in carrying FBN.

FBN finally debuted here at a time when I don't seek out business news.

I don't even watch CNBC as much as I did in the "go-go" days of the economy.

When the battle between communism and capitalism looms large in the political debate, how do you excise politics from the business news of the day? Is business news, which I don’t watch, more concerned with what’s going on in individual business sectors and companies?

Get Judge Napolitano OFF the FOX Business network!!!!!
sheesh

Eric Boller has become the Bill O’Reilly of FOX Business, arguing with and shouting over a panel of brain dead liberals? Why even give voice to liberal poli-sci professors on economics arguments on a business channel? That blonde from Occidental is a zombie.

Cavuto is now on FOX News? What a goat rope. Who put his cajones in a lock box?

Stuart Varney and Liz MacDonald are about the last reasons to watch FBN

I sure miss Dave Ramsey.

Then fire Napolatano and Cavuto that would help your ratings.

Too expensive to watch FNB where I live, because Comcast charges an exorbitant extra fee — over and above the $80.00 per month they charge me to watch CNBC, FNC, CNN, Bloomberg and MSNBC.

Getting politics out of business news is just about the most NAIVE statement I’ve heard in awhile...
how utterly ridiculous!

Here’s an idea, move Judge Napolitano over to FNC to replace O’Gasbag. They are right, FBN is replacing FNC in the political arena. A lot of the time, Hannity is just shilling for Romney, and Greta can’t STFU when she has someone on who has some intellect. Overall, FBN is head and shoulders above FNC.
