Bachmann calls on Holder to resign. Romney dodges.
As pressure continues to mount on Attorney General Eric Holder for his role in a plot to arm Mexicos Sinaloa drug cartel to support the 90-percent lie, Republican presidential contenders are finally being asked about their position on the scandal.
Michele Bachmann told reporters after a town hall meeting Monday morning that if the facts are as they seem, the attorney general must step down:
This is an extremely serious set of facts that were looking at, Bachmann said when The Daily Caller asked if Holder should resign.
There needs to be a full investigation. And surely he should resign if the facts prove to be what they appear to be.
Bachmann became the first Republican presidential hopeful to call for Holder to potentially step down. GOP frontrunner Mitt Romney, also campaigning Monday, was asked whether he would call upon Holder to resign over the gun-walking scandal. He dodged the yes-or-no question for a painful 35 seconds:
Governor, should Eric Holder resign over Fast and Furious? Thats a yes-or-no question, governor.
After Romney initially ignored the question, The Daily Caller asked it a second time.
Romney wheeled around, took a break from shaking hands, signing autographs and answering voters questions, and took 35 seconds to explain why he wouldnt answer the yes-or-no question.
I do press [availabilities] and then I answer questions, that are important questions, in the length that I want to do, Romney said. But what I dont do is in a group like this is stop and rattle off questions to people just as we walk along.
So that way, he continued, you dont get the chance to hear the full answer that Id like to give. So those are important questions. Ill be happy to address them in a press avail or at the town meeting. But in these events, at events like this I dont take press questions, because it doesnt give you or me the chance to have a full discussion of the topic, when particularly its an important one like that.
Romney and Bachmann, along with the other GOP hopefuls, will participate in the 90-minute Washington Post/Bloomberg debate tonight in New Hampshire. The furor over Operation and Fast and Furious and other alleged gunwalking operations has escalated significantly since the last Republican debate, and tonight may offer the first chance to see the candidates forced to answer questions about the plot, the administrations attempts to stonewall the investigation, and whether or not Attorney General Holder should resign.
Herman Cain, the long-shot turned first-tier candidate, seems to have the most to gain or lose with his opinion on the scandal. Cains position on gun rights has been described as soft and a weak point in the conservative businessmans base appeal. Texas Governor Rick Perry, another top tier candidate, would be expected to take a strong stance, and should be good for a soundbite should the question come about during the debate.
Any time a firearms-related thread is created on FreeRepublic, please be sure to add the "banglist" keyword to it so that interested FReepers don't miss it. Just a suggestion.
Let Freedom Ring,
Life goes on outside of the 2012 race, and Holder is being excoriated there as well. House Oversight and Government Reform Committee Chairman Darrell Issa used his strongest language yet yesterday, stopping just short of calling him a criminal:
These firearms were not interdicted. They were not stopped. Your agents allowed these firearms purchases to continue, sometimes even monitoring them in person, and within days some of these weapons were being recovered in Mexico. Despite widespread knowledge within its senior ranks that this practice was occurring, when asked on numerous occasions about the veracity of this letter, the Department has shockingly continued to stand by its false statement of February 4, 2011.
Mr. Attorney General, you have made numerous statements about Fast and Furious that have eventually been proven to be untrue. Your lack of trustworthiness while speaking about Fast and Furious has called into question your overall credibility as Attorney General. The time for deflecting blame and obstructing our investigation is over. The time has come for you to come clean to the American public about what you knew about Fast and Furious, when you knew it, and who is going to be held accountable for failing to shut down a program that has already had deadly consequences, and will likely cause more casualties for years to come.
Issas letter mirrors the thoughts of other public officials and an increasing number of media figures. An unsigned op-ed in the San Francisco Examiner cites the constantly changing series of excuses from the Department of Justice, and calls for Holder to fire his aides or be fired himself.
Writing in the Washington Post, Marc A. Thiessen described Holder as Obamas albatross, and ripped his entire tenure as U.S. attorney general as a series of catastrophic failures.
David Zurawik noted in the Baltimore Sun that the administrations handing of the gunwalking scandal shows contempt for real reporters that actually ask the hard questions. This was a criticism of both the White House and the majority of mainstream media outlets that have done everything in their power to minimize or ignore the story when they werent posting political hatchet jobs on behalf of the administration, as the New York Times and Washington Post have both done.
Issa continues to ramp up the pressure on Holder and the Department of Justice, and may issue subpoenas as early as today. Subpoenas would call on Holder to turn over documents hes so far withheld, to testify under oath again in front of Congress, and would also request communications about the plot from over a dozen senior DOJ employees that may have been involved.
Gunwalker ? ping
I wonder if the same FBI/DEA "cartel informants" they were applauding yesterday were involved in the murder of Brian Terry?
Were they going to provide Fast and Furious guns to the "Iranian terrorists?"
How about "Be prosecuted for 200 counts of Negligent Homicide and several thousand counts of international arms smuggling"?
AND the state department, AND th CIA, DEA, FBI, NSA, ad infinitum. Either our ememies have won, or we don’t realize who our enemies really are...which is circular for THEY have won.
We are now standing on the threshold of a possible all out ME war deliberately concocted and induced by this admin.
Our enemy is the monolithic government that has gorged and enlarged by the evil, simple-minded, anti-American, Marxist, Muslim that occupies the White House with his 850 assorted freaks all hell-bent on accomplishing their mission of killing America!
Great pictorial. Thanks for posting. Holder & Obama should be doing time in a Mexican prison or be tried for treason.
Where are the glorious, method-supporting results of the guns that were successfully tracked? /SARCASM
Anyone who is surprised by this is either willfully blind or a moron, or both.
This administration is run by a guy who was raised from his mother's knee to hate freedom and hate Western Civilization.
An all-out ME war would suit him just fine.
Trav, this guy was created out of whole cloth by the powers that be. I swear I do NOT believe there was any iranian connection whatsoever to this. False flag and far more dangerous than anyone appears to perceive.
There was NO real connection to the zetas. It was a completely phony scam they played on this stupid man. It was an FBI toadie in Houston that pretended to be the zeta connection. In reality, there was NO connection either to iran OR Mexico. NONE. It was all a complete setup on this guy.
No info at all on ‘the one who got away’ and is supposedly back in iran.,,or ‘at large’ depending on which talking head you listen to.
This is what we can expect if Romney should win the presidency. That is why Herman Cain is looking so much better to conservatives.
If they can’t do something to totally upset the apple cart, Holder and company are looking at serious prison time. Nixon’s att. general did 4 years in the slammer...and NOBODY was murdered over Watergate. So this gang knows they have to do something to change the subject in a BIG way....like war with Iran.
I would not put that beyond Holder. Imagine the leverage they have over all the mid-levels who are also looking at prison time. FBI “informants” are trapped between the devil and the sea, or as hispanics say, “between the sword and the wall.” They are totally controlled, their lives hang in the balance. If they don’t follow orders, a dime is dropped, and they will be tortured and beheaded. So they will do ANYTHING they are ordered to do.
Shoot Brian Terry. Play their bit role to create an “Iranian plot.”
This is not obama. This is someone who has been aiming at this far longer and had already set up the infrastucture. obama is figurehead who isn’t anywhere near smart enough to engineer this kind of top down, bottom up coup. THIS is the clintons planning with leftist money backing.
obama was chosen for this because of his skin color, his muslim leanings, and his marxist tendencies. He cares more about sports than governing. No. This is NOT obama. obama doesn’t have a clue. He does exactly what he is told.
OTOH, EVERY single person involved in running this admin are clinton people. Every single one.
Republicans do not purge the bureaucracy when they take charge. Romney will staff it with even more Official Democrats and sympathetic "Republicans" and "non-partisans" in order to "work with the Democrats." The Legislature will have less and less relevance as the bureaucracy becomes THE government. Rulings from Departments will evermore substitute for enacted laws. Clinton and the kenyan have showed the way on this it has not been resisted.
Yep. Even Romney (big weasel that he is) should've been able to knock that question out of the park. There are two possiblities: 1. He doesn't know enough about the scandal to risk an answer; or 2. He agrees with the goals of the Gunwalker operation.
Totally unacceptable, either way.
You’re right; I should have worded that differently.
The Won does nothing on his own; he’s just a marionette, dancing on the strings of whoever it is on the other end of the Blackberry. But he is their willful accomplice.
I don’t think it’s the Clintons, though; the evil behind this is darker than the Clintons could even imagine (can’t believe I’m saying that).
But whoever it is, if they get their way, it’ll be millions of us dead, the rest of us in chains. I expect to be among the former.
Remember, Romney was acceptable to the same electorate that put (and kept) Jean Kerrie and The Swimmer in the Senate.
And the same money swamp.
Where did this “gunwalker” term come from? This is US Federal “gunRUNNING’ pure and simple.
I disagree. At least 45 were killed [possibly more] when E Howard Hunt's wife Dorothy and CBS newswoman Michelle Clark, among others, died aboard United Flight 533 landing in, uh, Chicago.
The crash was not investigated by the NTSB or FBI, but by the FBI and Justice Department, at that time headed by Attorney General John Mitchell. who did those 4 years in the slammer you mentioned.
