Cain's '9-9-9' tax reform plan under fire from both left and right
The Hill ^ | Oct 9, 2011 | Bernie Becker

With Herman Cain surging up Republican presidential polls in recent weeks, his plan to dramatically overhaul the tax code is starting to attract questions - even from fellow conservatives.

But conservatives have a different concern - that Cain's plan to install a 9 percent national sales tax, paired with income and corporate taxes at that same rate, would give Democrats a brand new tax stream to try to squeeze out more revenue.

Even Grover Norquist's Americans for Tax Reform (ATR), while saying there is a lot to like about the 9-9-9 plan, says the idea could give liberals a chance to expand the nation’s revenue base.

"Having an easy ability to raise new revenue gives members of Congress the incentive not to really deal with the problems," said Dubay, a senior policy analyst at Heritage. "That's a fool's errand."

Which means it most probably has merit.

After all, look at what the so-called “experts” on both left and right have provided us lately.

Got Ponzi?

I propose 7-7-7 with no changes for 70 years.

Perrywinkles need to wave at Cain, as he goes past, he keeps on rising, perrywinles keep on falling. Desperately trying to find a piece of lint on the slide to hang on to.

No one else has dared to touch the tax code.

Let the Left and Right fire all they want.

I want solution to our problems.

What are there solutions to the increasing taxes 53% of us are paying to support the entitlement system of our Country??

Herman Cain speaks my mind on issues that are plaguing this Country.

Cain/Gingrich that’s my ticket so far!

I am impressed with Mr. Cain for advancing a reasonable and viable solution for moving forward. It offers a substantive discussion and makes a clear statement of his principles. What do we have from the democrats? More spending and debt.

I hope conservatives take a good look at his 999 plan. I am doing that myself.

It is discouraging, IMHO, to see so many jump on the Cain Train without really knowing very much about him. We knew pretty much everything there is to know about Sarah Palin. We know very little about Herman Cain other than that he sounds conservative and says the right things. That got America into big trouble with inexperience, smooth-talking Obama.

Herman Cain could be the right candidate. He could be the wrong candidate. It’s far too early to make a thorough assessment of his policy positions. I won’t criticize anyone for supporting him, but I do encourage FReepers to review his positions thoroughly. He needs to be vetted.

I like him. But I need much more detailed information about him before I can say “he’s got my vote.”

Of Course he is.

Because the Political Establishment in both the GOP and the Dems party realize that the 9-9-9 plan destroys their primary source of political power, their ability to tinker with the tax code.

I would urge you to read This Is Herman Cain, it’s very inexpensive if you have an e-Reader. It was sold out of three bookstores and Wal Mart when I went to find it this weekend so I got it for my iPad.

It’s his autobiography and it was obviously quickly written as part of his campaign strategy but it really tells his story.

Very impressive guy. Interestingly, it doesn’t reference 9-9-9 but it does contain policy and illuminates a lot of his positions and proposals.

Do you people just lie in wait or what.

I was planning to comment on Cain’s plan which isn’t all that bad but I see festering boils growing on pro Cain posters before anything’s been said.

And they’re all jumping on Perry who has nothing to do with this article. Frankly, I think you people need to seek help.

But as to the 9-9-9 plan, I see a lot of virtue in it. It would tax everyone equally in a way. Of course, wealthy people who spend more would be taxed more on the final 9, but it would be fair.

I wouldn’t worry TOO much about it being used to raise taxes. Tax plans are changed all the time and dems will always try to raise taxes. It would be very fair on both businesses and ordinary tax payers.

Cain has at least got people talking about solutions to our governments ‘tax & spend’ problem. His 9-9-9 solution has a few bugs in it like not addressing that pestty 16th amendment but the people are actually motivated to do something about the true problem now.

Quit beating up our chance to get out of this mess. Any of these candidates are far better than this loser we have now. I agree we should examine his plan, but let’s not beat up one of our own. It may be our inly opportunity to restore freedom, common sense, and dignity to the office.

I know more about Cain than I do about Romney. I know enough about Romney and Cain to know I like Cain better.

I know more about Perry than any other candidate because I’m from Texas, I went to A&M, and I have friends who are in the political establishment of Texas.

Unfortunately, that means that I don’t like Perry.

Since I’ve been reading up on Cain, I know more about him than all the candidates except for Perry.

He needs to be vetted.

He needs to be vetted? What about Perry? What do we actually know about Perry other then he says all the right things? Well so did Bush in 2000. What is Perry's Presidential Agenda? We know what Cain plans to do and what he stands for. he been busy telling those of us who will listen all about them. What does Perry plan to do?

There are parts of the 999 plan that I like and don’t like (although the idea that the 47% who pay no federal income taxes now pay a ‘fair share’ really, really appeals to me).

But the fact is, no plan put forward by a presidential candidate becomes law upon election. It has to go through Congress and if it emerges from that swamp it will look very different.

What is resonating about Cain’s plan is the fact that it shows that he is willing to make radical, fundamental changes to a tax code that is so contrived, complicated and treacherous the average person does not feel comfortable navigating it without professional help.

Chances are 999 will never see legislation, but if something comparable or equally challenging does, a President Cain will be receptive to it. I don’t know about the others, save for perhaps Bachmann.

“At a forum in downtown Sioux City, Perry touted the Lone Star state’s record of creating more than 1 million jobs in the last decade, more than any other state. As president, Perry said he would turn the faltering national economy by following the “same blueprint” as he championed in Texas — cutting the size of government, keeping taxes low and eliminating job-killing rules and regulations.”

I could say something about Perry as I’m from Texas also and I like him,
,,,,,but
why does any Cain thread have to turn into a haven for the people who hate Perry.

This is about Cain’s tax plan - pros and cons.

Sheesh, people

If Perry and Romney keep supporting progressive taxation like they are now, then they deserve to go down in flames.
